S&W 6906 Operates as Double Action Only

Hello,

I'm new to posting, so excuse any etiquette errors. Recently purchased a used Smith & Wesson Model 6906 9mm Pistol. From everything I've read, it should operate as a Traditional Double Action Pistol with the first shot, if not cocked with the slide, being Double Action and subsequent shots being Single Action. My Pistol however, operates as Double Action Only, in that the trigger cocks and fires the pistol for each shot. It is definately not the 6946 DAO Model as it clearly shows the Model as 6906 and it does have the external lever safety. Is it possible the gun was altered to be DAO or was there a version of the 6906 that was DAO? Finally, might there be a way to have it changed back to operating as DA/SA by a gunsmith?

If dry firing and not racking the slide to cock the hammer, then a 6906 SA/DA will be in DA mode.
During live fire, after a shot, the slide will slide back to cock the hammer making the following trigger pull be in SA mode.

All Model 6906s were configured as "traditional" da pistols (da first shot; sa on all subsequent shots). Either something is wrong with your pistol or, as you surmised, somebody might have altered it somehow to be a dao pistol. A trip to Smith & Wesson might be in order here.

FWIW some oddball law-enforcement special-order S&W pistols exist. A police department may have ordered their pistols this way so officers could still prevent the gun from firing by actuating the safety.

At any rate, a trip to S&W is probably in order.
