Taurus 9mm??
So I see that there are some reviews and info on the Taruus, most of them being negative. However I am thinking of getting a cheap stainless gun that will be a truck gun. I want something that will be realiable, but still cheap enough to where it wont matter if it gets a little rusty or something being out in the truck all the time or even, God forbid, it get stolen. I was at the local shop today and the guy there suggested either the Taurus 24/7 Pro $339, http://www.taurususa.com/products/pr...ategory=Pistol, or the Millenium PT111 Pro $319, http://www.taurususa.com/products/pr...ategory=Pistol. Both seemed like nice guns, and the 24/7, being the larger, would absorb more recoil. I am looking for something $400 or under, are these gun as bad as some reviews are or are the good reviews more accurate? Does anybody have any other suggestions besides these guns? As a note it must be stainless steel, to reduce maintenance, and I am not interested in any revolvers. Thanks.

Taurus Firearms
A friend of mine was looking for a firearm under $400 and purchased a 24/7 9mm and he loves it. I bought my wife a few years ago a brand new Taurus PT 909SS 9mm and it is an awesome pistol. Never had a malfunction and is very reliable. As far as the Millenium Pro's I have heard nothing but bad things about them. I would personnally stay away from the Millenium Pro's but as far as the other Taurus models I would say go for it.

I have a 24/7 Pro in 9mm and after more than 3000 rounds through it, I havent had a hiccup one. Whatever ammo I have fed it it has chewed it up and spit it out. HSTs, Hi-Shoks, Rangers, Gold Dots, XTPs and beaucoup variety of handloads. The only thing that I havent shot out of it yet is lead but I might be trying that out here shortly.
My friends have shot it and are impressed with such a 'cheap' pistol working so good. I think I have gotten my moneys worth out of it. Brad |

I have a PT111 and after a few 1000's rounds the firing pin broke, I sent it to Taurus and within two weeks I had it back as good as new. Mine is not a milluim pro though.

You can search the forum and you will find people on both sides of the fence when it comes to Taurus. I for one, find them to be good, serviceable handguns. I own two, one is a Millenium Pro 2nd gen. DAO. In over 1000 rounds it has never malfuntioned. I'm comfortable with it's reliability.
The first generation gun had problems, and should be avoided. But beyond that they are known to be as good as any other. Heck, my friend had problems with his Sig for god sakes!

I have owned 2 - 9mm semis both shot great, but resale value is aweful. I still carry the Model 85 in .38 special and then have the .454 Raging Bull for squirrel hunting.

Good guns at a good price. I have 9 Tauri total. They all work and are very well made. They are inexpensive new thus will have less resale.

I had a PT92, the copy of the older Beretta design. I got it cheap and sold it cheap, but I shouldn't have. It was a brilliant gun. I think part of the reason is that they had Beretta's old tooling, and Beretta is no slouch.
I don't think I'd trust my life to a new Taurus. They seem to be hit or miss as far as reliability. |

You will find probably more people here that hate Taurus than like them. I personally own a 24/7 Pro45. It is my main carry weapon. It has never failed me so far and for the money I am not sorry I bought it. It has a lifetime warranty but you must be patient if you need to use it. My PPK/S just recently broke and S&W only gives a 1 year warranty. I know people who own the Pt111 and love it. Thinking about purchasing one soon. Bud's has them for $299 delivered.

I have a PT 92 FS and a PT111,had a problem with the 111 as the pins were shifting (werent factory glued) so my gunsmith froind put some red loctite in there and good as new..dont like how it handles much though but still all in all a decent gun.
The PT 92,I still have a hard time finding a holder for it since its picattiny rail is 'a bit oversized' but yet,I LOVE this handgun...never a FTF and very accurate. |

I've got a PT-92, and it has been 100% from day 1. The only failures I've had have been due to handloaded light target ammo that didn't have enough "oomph" to lock the slide back at the end of the magazine. Can't blame the gun for that. Otherwise -- it has happily eaten everything I've fed it. Accurate, decent enough trigger, and the safety/decocker supports C&L and is in the right place. I can do without the rail, but then again I can ignore it, too -- and I do.

No problems out of my 24/7 OSS 9mm after a couple thousand rounds. Nice, reliable, accurate gun.

I have a Pt-92, Pt-25 and just bought a 24/7 OSS today.
I love them and have never had a problem with the 92 or 25 so I don't expect one withthe 24/7 OSS. -Cheers |

well i rented and shot a PT 92 today along with a Glock and XD.
I have to say I did not like it. It had two malfunctions. The first was the bullet failing to feed into the chamber. The second was when i cocked the pistol and the slide did not go all the way forward on the return. I'm not sure if it was my fault because I'm brand new to semi-autos but I am pretty sure at least one was not my fault. Either way i wouldn't place my trust in another Taurus.

If the price was right, I might buy a PT92. I wouldn't even consider a 24/7 (again.)

I have the PT111 and love it. Much of the complaints you hear are about the first generation models but I have had no problems with my third generation model. I love the SA trigger. Lots of people don't but I greatly prefer it. My only dislike is the straight eight sights but I have gotten used to them. To me it is the best buy on the market.

taurus
I am on my 2nd taurus. Both have been the Millenium models. The 1st was older double action only. Just could not get used to the trigger, but no malfunctions. The latest is the 3rd generation and it is a fine gun. Shoots anything I feed it without a problem. It is more accurate than I expected and after about 800 rounds it is my main carry.

I have three Taurus Millenium models, PT111 SS MilPro DAO 2nd gen, PT140 SS MilPro DAO 2nd gen and PT145 Pro SS SA/DA 3rd gen. So far I have no problems with any of them and I pretty much use the same holsters for the PT111, PT140 and my Glock 27. I have a co-worker that also owns a PT111 MilPro with no reliability issues and also loves his gun.

Sounds like a revolver might be ideal for your purposes: durable, inexpensive and reliable. But if you definitely want a semi auto and want an alternative to a Taurus then take a look at a Bersa. They have an excellent reputation and are are about the same price as a Taurus. I have a mini firestorm 9mm for my ccw and I have never had a malfunction.

Why stainless?
I have a S&W Sigma 9mm. Plastic won't rust, 16+1 rounds and it's a S&W. The best is Buds has them at $289. no tax or shipping with 2 mags!

Look,Taurus warrants their guns forever.
Not that it's a guarantee you'd need it. I have owned three Model 85 Taurus's no problems. And I own a PT101 40 S&W in stainless that is simply one of THE most beautiful production semi auto pistols ever made. Yea,that's a Taurus handgun there. If you check the internet enough you will see ALL manufacturers have some guns that have problems. Some that are even high end (over a grand each) 1911 manufacturers that boggles the mind. |

I decided to buy a Bersa instead
I considered buying a Taurus Millenium Pro but found a lot of owners reported after several hundred or thousand shots there is a roll pin in the frame that tended to break. I found that very few owners reported any problems with the Bersa Thunder. I decided to buy a Bersa Ultra Compact 9mm, which I have only owned a short time but is a very nice gun for the $310 I paid for it, with 2 13 round magazines.

I owned a PT92 in 9mm and liked it a lot, but I sold it to finance my purchase of a pre-ban Poly Tech AK. In retrospect, I wish I'd sold my S&W 4506 (which I don't like as much) instead, but at the time, I couldn't find any takers in my area.
Anyway, my recollection is that the quality isn't quite as good as Beretta's, but for the price, it's hard to beat. Plus, I liked the fact that the PT92 had the frame-mounted safety, which I prefer to the Beretta's slide-mounted safety. |
