IMR 4227 in .44 Mag

Hello:
I'd be interested in hearing of anyone's experience using IMR 4227 in .44 Mag with 240 Gr. LSWC. How does it compare with 2400 if you've tried it? I'd also be interested in how the 4227 meters through either a 550B or through a standard measure.

Thanks.

Pete

I prefer H110 over 2400 for 44 mag, but I used to use 4227 in my 7mm IHMSA loads. It meters very well in my RCBS Uniflow.

I've had good results with 4227 in a .44 mag, provided I use magnum or WLP primers, and also provided I kept the loads fairly heavy.

Lighter loads, and/or standard primers gave me a lot of unburned powder.

Over my 32 years of reloading I found that IMR 4227 powder and a 240 grain bullet works fine in a Ruger but, for some reason a "good" hot load builds too much pressure in a Smith & Wesson. The gunsmith loved to remove a particial case from 41 and 44 cylinders. He made good money at it.
I settled for 2400.
