Remington S.R. Primer Question ?
What is the difference in the Rem. 6 1/2 SR Primer and their 7 1/2 SR Benchrest Primer? Are they interchangable? I don't know if the benchrest version is just made more accurately or if it has a different priming compound? The 7 1/2 has a different color case.

The 6 ½ rem. primer is made for low pressure 22 centerfire rounds like the 22 hornet, jet and one other I can't recall right now. Use of the rem 6½ in .223 and other high pressure rounds can result in pierced primers. I destroyed the bolt face on my AR-15 when I used the 6½ in "normal" loaded 55 grain bullets. The primers pierced right at the edge of the firing pin indentation, the hot gases cut the bolt face like a torch.

The difference between EVERYONE's BR primers and the standard run of primers is closer inspection and closer tolerances to which BR primers are held.

WRONG! Big Time WRONG! The 6 1/2 is designed for low pressure rounds like the Hornet. The 7/1/2 is designed for hight pressure rounds like the 223. This is from Remingtons web page. In rifle cartridges, the 6-1/2 small rifle primer should not be used in the 17 Remington, 222 Remington or the 223 Remington. The 7-1/2 BR is the proper small rifle primer for these rounds. |
