Marlin .22 Lever Gun Problems
Hi Smithy's, question about my Marlin .22 Rifle. (Model 39 Take Down Series)
I have had this gun for about 15 years, and its always been taken care of, and shoots great. Recently however, I have been getting some soft primer strikes, and failure to fire. The rimfire brass is dented from the firing pin, but no boom, and the rounds really can't be classified as misfires. This has happened with good ammo, not so good ammo, but its not constant. Say maybe 3-4 per 50 rounds. I have done a detail strip and clean as far as I can go, but no real improvement. I can post a few pics if you need, just tell me what part of the rifle you need to see. Thanks all!

Most common causes of light strikes in the 39:
Check the hammer spring for weakness and the hammer for sticky movement. To check it out, carefully remove the butt stock. Check the firing pin for fouling that might make it sticky, and check the firing pin tip for wear or breakage. Field strip and remove the bolt. The firing pin will lift right out. Make sure the dismount thumb screw is snugged down tight to pull both receiver halves together. A improperly snugged screw can allow the receivers to fail to mate fully and cause light strikes. I recommend using a large coin or make a 1/8" thick brass "wrench" to use in unscrewing and tightening the screw. Screwdrivers will scar up the slot on the screw. |
