Here in the southeast the Browning Bar has a strong and loyal following with my favorite being a 30.06 BAR shooting Federal Game-Shok 125gr. I currently have 4 ranging from 243win to the 270wsm and they are all reliable, accurate shooters. I have killed deer out to 460 yds with my 270wsm BAR and out to 365 yds with the 30.06. The main thing is to get a rifle that feels good and is comfortable to shoot and don't look back...

just about any centerfire rifle round you could think of besides 7.62 soviet(unless you are shooting within 50 yards). anything bigger than 280 is a bit overkill in my opinion but it still gets the job done

I think the most versatile round for any form of deer in my opinion is the .30-30 Winchester.

45 Colt (Ruger 240gr Hardcast) @ 45 yards (Muley - California)
Springfield`06 150gr @ 75 yards (Muley - California))

Ruger`77V 243Win @ 235 yards (Muley- New Mexico
458Win 405gr (loaded down to 45-70) @ 80 yards (Alabama)

Sharps 54cal Carbine (Paper Cartridge) @ 75 yards (Alabama)

Like a lot of things in this kind of business, you can/do use different tools in different situations to do the same job. I tend to stay well under 300 yards for any number of reasons.

List of rifles and pistols I want to take a deer or hog with is a bit longer. All of the above have taken hogs as well.

I have hunted deer with a number of rifles and calibers over 50 years and the ones that have impressed me as the best are several. On the AR-15 platform the 6.8 spc is great. The 44 mag in a lever gun or pistol is also impressive. But the caliber that I feel that does it best is the .303 British. It has power range and it is accurate and it does not batter you every time you touch one off. There are catridges that can beat the 303 in one catagory or another but it has all where it counts

I made my first kill with a .444 marlin on a button buck that dressed out at 80 pounds. I had a dog that was bigger than that. Remember, you can't make them too dead.

I also use surplus NATO ball ammo in 7.62 from my Garand. Specialized hunting rounds be damned! If it was good enough to kill VC it's good enough to kill Bambi.

I thought I was going to be the only one who was going to list a .257 Roberts, but I see Quincunx beat me to it. It's the only round I've used for whitetail.

I'm a huge fan of the old 30-30 cartridge for deer out to about 175 yards or so. Good accuracy and penetration every time!

12 ga, Side by side, rifled slug, 40 yards. Taped a fishing rod guide to the rear of the center rib, as a "jake leg" peep sight. B&C grossed 176 inches!

Since then:
.243 Model 70
7X57 Mauser bolt action, 140 grain and 175 grain
.270 WSM Model 70. Really flattens them!

.17 HMR 17 gr Hornady. NEF Sportster (This was on a deer that had been wounded with a slug gun. It was gut shot in the brush, the hunter couldnt make an accurate shot and we couldnt get closer. I shot it between the eyes at 50-60yds. Instant death, saved the meat, but it NOT something I would do on a healthy deer).

So far I have only taken deer with 2 calibers, but was trying to use as many different sights as possible:

20 ga shotgun : open sights, scope, red dot

.450 Marlin : peep sights, scope

My new thing is to try to take a deer with each of the guns my Dad left me. We'll see how long that takes!
