22 Revolver made in USA?

Is it just me or is the selection of US made 22 DA revolvers really that limited? I'm new to this so I've not much idea about what may be available. THXXXXXXXX!

This is what comes to mind off hand. Yeah, your choices are somewhat limited.

Edit: oh darnit, you specified DA revolvers. I didn't notice that. Most of my picks were single action!! My mistake.

In terms of current production, I think there are only three. The Ruger Sp101, and two from S&W, the 617 and 317 (the Kit Gun and the K-22). Ruger makes two Single Actions (the Bearcat and the Single Six), and that is about it.

So if we left the country we'd have the Tarus tracker as a possible choice. Might I ask how that gun is generally regarded?

Harrington & Richardson (H&R) used to make some inexpensive but good quality .22 revolvers. So did Charter Arms. H&R is out of business, but Charter is back in production under new ownership. Haven't looked, but maybe they currently make a .22 revolver. Try Charter Arms on a search engine.

Otherwise, S&W and Ruger are the only two U.S. manufacturers I know of for sure. Both make high quality firearms - and ask big bucks for them. I think Colt is offering a limited edition of their scaled down "Peacemaker" in .22 (very big bucks though).

If you are willing to go "off shore", Taurus & Rossi make some good DA revolvers. And there are a bunch of Italian replica SA "cowboy" guns in .22.

To my mind the best values in U.S. made revolvers in 22 calibre on the market today are the pre WWII products of Colt and S&W. The Colt Officers Model Target, the S&W Outdoorsman, and K22 Masterpiece (prewar) show workmanship that has not, as a rule, been seen since. And generally they shoot at least as well as any revolver made in the U.S. since thiat time.

But I have a hard time not purchasing nice examples of revolvers made prior to about 1960 when I see them- the Colt Officers Model Match, the S&W (postwar) K22 Masterpiece and the Combat masterpiece are all fine revolvers.

Two of the nicest out of production double action revolvers available on the market today are the S&W Kit-guns in the Model 34 and Model 63.

Dan Wesson Model 22 or 722 in stainless.
Very accurate pistol, great plinker. Find one used and it's usually a real bargain.
Model 22 and 722 revolvers are not small however. They are built on the DW small frame, roughly the same size as a S&W "L" frame.

Besides the others mentioned, Freedom Arms does list a few different models of single action .22's. They are built on either the model 83 (large) or 97 (medium) frames.

prices are high, but these are likely to outshoot any other .22 revolver. I believe the American Rifleman tested one a few years ago, and got groups that were basically one hole at 25 yards. One of the few guns where they actually gushed about it

recently, both john taffin writing for american handgunner and jeff quinn have check out versions of the .22 tracker and the smaller one. both sources report good performance and very fine accuracy. the .17 hrm tracker shows that Taurus can, indeed get multiple chambers lined up right for accuracy.

I've snooped at Gunsamerica and the Ruger site and such but find no reference to SP 101 in 22 lr.

I recently did this search and was so close to a ruger sp101 except it is a 6 shot. I wanted a small revolver with more. The ruger is around but a 4 inch barrel seemed funky, I have a 357 mag sp101 with a 3 inch barrel and like it fine. Only 6 shots and a 4 inch barrel bothered me a bit.

I can recomend a S&W 317 which is an airweight kit gun with 8 shots available. Neat, very very light, and neat. Yes it has a lock and yes I wonder about the direction the company is headed. 3 inch barrel also.

But for what I wanted I found nothing of great quality, your opinions may differ on some of the lower quality stuff and I have not messed with some of the more expensive custom stuff.

I was after plinking and I wanted that super light weight but for now question a 357 mag version, so the 22 smith won for better or worse. Very pricey but working with a trade in made it more acceptable to me since I had spent money once and was unhappy. So that for trade in and more money made me real happy.

If you run a search the trigger can be made better, as it is I am improving my double action trigger pull by leaps and bounds cause this thing has a lot of weight to the pull.

A friend has a old smith model 18 I use from time to time. 6 shot, great shooter. My understanding is hard to find, no idea of value. Highly suggest if you can find one.
