jaysouth, I like your alternatives to .22 for kids. Manageable loads in good guns.

Buying another gun, let alone a centerfire, because .22lr is TEMPORARILY hard to find would be moronic. Repeat after me.....This is temporary! People need to stop these "since .22lr is never gonna be available again, what's the next best option" threads. We've seen this thread with the Mosins, seen it on another subject that escapes my mind. Stop already.

Not using ANY excuse to buy another rifle is moronic. Repeat after me. ANY excuse to buy another rifle is a good excuse. No crisis should be allowed to go to waste. Honey, I can't find any .22 LR ammo I NEED to go buy a .17 Hornet.

I like the .22 Hornet too. Cheap to reload, but the factory loads are astronomical!

With cast boolets and light loads, it is pretty easy on the pocketbook. Cases last longer, too.

Lots of good .22 Hornet guns around, from H&R's to CZ's to whatever level of quality you are willing to pay for.

If you really want to get another rifle, I would consider the 17HMR. I recently picked up a Savage 93R17 and it is without a doubt the most accurate out-of-the-box rimfire I own. Mine cost $220 at a local sporting goods store.

The 17HMR is a blast to shoot, but it is more expensive to shoot at 10-15 bucks per 50 rounds - depending where you shop.

I can probably shoot my reloaded 223 rounds cheaper, but really enjoy the Savage.

Agreed, but using it as an excuse for the wife or even just a general excuse to one's own self is one thing, actually believing it is a completely different matter.

Can you promise me/us that this is temporary. I "believe" it is also but with all the NUT-JOB politicians around the country and in DC and with ALL THE MORONS reelecting them who "really" knows what will happen in 2014. Maybe I "NEED" to to go get a .17 Hornet. Oh wait, can't find one and I can't get any brass or bullets.

what about pistol calibres in carbines or perhaps a lever action?

is everything picked clean? not cheap as .22 but affordable to enjoy on occasion and useable in a hunting situation and HD I guess

7.62x54r. You can buy 880 rounds for around 230.00. That's what I have switched to but I am a Mosin fanatic.

I cast my own bullets for the 22 Hornet and can actually load a round without a gas check CHEAPER than 22 rimfire, or WITH a gas check for a little more $ but a LOT more Bow-Wow.The Hornet is my choice but the .223 Remington can also be loaded with cast bullets with similar results.
