How bad does Ballistol smell?
I want to order this stuff because I hear it's awesome, but if it really smells bad and leaves the gun smelling bad, I'd prefer not to and will just get some Frog Lube. Frog Lube is just soooo expensive. I basically am trying to choose between these two because they're non-toxic CLPs.

Ballistol smells... Odd. Can be a little strong, but it goes away after a few minutes after application.

Ballistol has anethole oil in it... which comes from the anise plant. If you like the smell of liqueurs like Chartreuse, Jagermeister, and anisette, or black jelly beans or biscochito cookies... you'll like Ballistol.
I love the stuff myself... that and G96, 'cause that smells like Bazooka bubble gum. C

Ballistol has an aroma. IMHO, not bad or offensive at all and not very strong. Not even noticable after use.
I use it but see a lot written about the odor and have to wonder what the fuss is. Not an issue. Good lube and cleaning product. Not a rust preventative. |

Have you checked out Gunzilla ? Has very low level odor
and is non-toxic. It is a CLP that works well. I am going to do a cold temp test, as soon as it hits -40 here, in a month or so. http://www.gunzilla.us/ Last edited by Carne Frio; November 2, 2012 at 12:15 AM. |

Very nice!....
The big green B is very nice!
To me, Ballistol has a light pine tree type scent & it works on many products, not just firearms/weapons. Wood, rubber, leather, metal, etc can all be cleaned or oiled with a light amount of Ballistol. The smell is OK to me. Other top US CLPs include; Weaponshield, Gunzilla, Eezox, LPX. Mpro7's LPX & Gunzilla are popular with US armed forces in SW Asia. Clyde |

Anise. Yes, 'couldn't think of the name. It smells like licorice to me.
That would be "likerish", not "liquor ice" as my wife insists on pronouncing it. |

I have always thought it smelled a bit like dirty feet myself.

Personally, I like the smell.
I've not reached the point of picking Ballistol over deodorant before work, but I do like the smell of it about the house: reminds me of good times had that day!! My wife disagrees.... heartily...

+10 for the http://www.gunzilla.us/
It is Great stuff and has very little odor. It is suppose to be non-toxic and the salesman would actually spray it in his mouth I really desolves gun crudd well. I use Ballistol for some of my blackpowder cleanup.. Black Powder has an odor to it, but the Ballistol smells TERRRIBLE! It seems to close my throught and it will ruin your leather accessories, because after it soaks into leather....it reeks forever.

The smell is neither bad nor good. Not a choice for a scented candle but not a deal breaker for me. I love using it and do not hate the smell.

I just spayed some on some ratchet straps and decided the smell was much better than I remembered. I might be getting used to it, but I really like the stuff regardless of the smell.
