Texas Conceal Carry Class?

Reading the TX DPS website it states that as long as you use a .32cal or larger you can qualify with it for the class of CCW. Has anyone tested with a .32cal or larger? I thought it was mandatory to have a 9mm before testing for CCW has this now been changed, or is it up to the instructor of the class on what calibur he prefers someone to qualify with?

I don't really understand the question. Yes, every TX CHL holder qualified with a .32 or larger - you have to if you want to be licensced.

I never heard of a 9mm requirement. If the instructor has hardware stipulations beyond what the law requires, I'd find a different instructor. Many will encourage you to use an auto rather than a revolver because it's better for you in the end, but if they refuse to certify you because of what you choose to shoot, they're not worthy of your business.

umm...

I certified with what I carry...certainly not a 9mm. For security officers who carry concealed on duty (private protection) in Texas, you must test with a 9mm.

I never heard of that '9mm rule'. I cert'd with a .45 semi-automatic. During my cert session, I think just about every popular caliber was represented... .40, .45, 9mm, .357, .38.

This answers your own question. Since the TXDPS is the governing body for CHLs, why are you being distrusting of what they state as being the minimal requirements?

IIRC, when the law was first passed, the minimum bullet size was 9mm/.355" like .38SPL & .380ACP. With .32 caliber guns becoming more popular, pressure was put to change the caliber floor to .32--a good thing, IMHO....

I tested with a 1911 style .45 ACP. One person in the class used a BDA in .380, most of the others used 9mm or a few used .40 S&W. I think we had one guy that use a pocket pistol in .32 auto also.

Didn't realize the law changed from what it started at.

I didn't realize that they had changed the law I remember when it first came out and they stated it must be a 9mm on the minimum size of caliber. I didn't realize it was posted on the TDPS website, of the change in laws.

This is cool.
