Makers proof marks on slugs?
When did they stop putting them on slugs? Was going though some of my old Gi ball ammo 45acp . and on some of my rem-umc 1918,1919 they had cracked cases and I pulled the slugs and there Is a (U) on them.

A "proof mark" is a stamp applied by an inspector after a gun has passed a "proof test" by firing an extremely high pressure load.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proof_test What you are seeing on those bullets is more likely an identifying "trademark" of the Union Metallic Cartridge Co. (UMC) There's little reason to mark each bullet, and more trouble to make the dies that way, so I imagine they just stopped to save money
