okay than my die is bad. my outer size is much more than that. i also am interested to see how big the carbide insert is in yours. you mentioned 3/8 in were you took a measurement. my carbide insert only goes in the die about 5/16th and then it stops. nothing after it. so it is sizing with a 5/16ths inch piece. maybe its right, maybe not. i am wating on rcbs to email me back. they just opened so we'll see.
i guess i wait till monday. they are closed on friday. |

had the wife measure the die for me over the phone, it is not tapered at all, and at the top and bottom measure .421. a much bigger differance than the .416 your reads.

I think your headed in the right direction with the die, their was anouther post, #10 on here that said his die was also .416. I wouldnt worry about calling rcbs, just take them back where you got them, and tell them that its over sized, they might give you a new set. This is what i did... Called rcbs, they said it sounded like it was a oversized die, and to take them back where i bought them, so i did and they hannded me a new set, no ??? asked for the most part.

Stacks,
It seems that both Bullspotter and I have dies that measure 0.416" ID at the tightest part of the carbide insert. When yu go for another set, I suggest that you take your calipers and check whatever they offer you. If it is over 0.416", I suggest that you ask for another. Also, recognize that even 0.416" will not let you load brass with0.006" to 0.007" thick walls. The 0.416" die willl leave the brass at about 0.418" - 0.419" after spring-back. That means the ID will be 0.418" - 2 x 0.007" = 0.404" at best. You need no more than 0.398" for 0.400" bullets. And, for your 0.399" bullets, you would need an ID of about 0.397". So, I think you need to pitch those thin walled cases. SL1 |

okay guys, i went to cabelas last night to buy another die set to compare mine with. the resizing die is bad. the new one resizes the cases and are now a good fit. i will deal with rcbs directly now for a new die and sell the other one. i will sort the brass and measure all my cases just in case. i dont want any accidents i can prevent. i measured the inside and the smallest point it measured .415. compared to .421
once again guys, i appreciate your assistance in figuring this out. bunch of good guys here. |

Stacks,
I'm not sure what you mean about selling "the other one." I hope you mean that you bought another die at Cabellas but want an RCBS die and will sell the Cabellas purchase when you get another one from RCBS. But, I want to make sure that you return the bad sizing die to RCBS or destroy it. If you let somebody else who is not as careful as you are get ahold of it, he/she may get hurt. It is best to get defective stuff out of circulation. It doesn't help our sport to let anybody have an accident. SL1 Last edited by SL1; March 7, 2009 at 09:16 AM. Reason: misread other message |

no once i get the new die from rcbs i will go ahead and sell the new kit i bought. no i would never sell the bad die. no i am not that kinda person. i bought a complete 3 die set and only used the sizing die out of it, so once the new rcbs die comes in, it will be a complete set and new. i will be sure to measure the new die first before selling it.

Sounds like I am too late, but I had about the same problem with .45 ACP. WESHOOT2 told me to special order an undersized die from Lee. That Fixed the problem for me.

two DIFFERENT problems
stacks04 had an improperly manufactured die.
The undersized die is best used with oft-fired cases that don't want to resize sufficiently to provide enough neck tension.

Winchester Brass?
I reloaded a bunch of .40 and had a lot of trouble with thin walled Winchester brass.
I use a Lee 4 die set and Unique powder. The powder would push the bullet back out of the case. A real pain in the butt. Might be why I didn't like working the 4 die set. I was using mixed brass and only Winchester gave me a problem. |

I just loaded over 500 rounds of Winchester brassed 40S&W. No problems with Winchester brass. I also used the FCD.

Just how thin is all this problem brass?
It would be helpful if all the posters who are having problems with thin brass would tell us others what to watch out for. Specifically:
a.) what was the wall thickness measurement at the case mouth?? b.) what does the headstamp read? c.) if known, what ammo did it come from (e.g., WW-white box, WW-"Ranger", Speer "Lawman", Speer "Gold Dot", Speer "Blaser Brass" etc.) SL1 |

40 S&W Problems
I use lots of 1Fired brass and have no issues other than a few Glock Once Fired Brass. I have a Dillon SDB, and can load 250 rounds per hour. Never any issues that I have read here. Sounds like reloading system issues. I Chamber or Cartridge Sizer check all Re-Loaded rounds before dumping into the "Shoot for Competetion" Bag. All others go into the Glock only bag.
