The Remington 591/592 (removable mag/tube mag) were made from 1969 to 1973. They have somewhat of a cult following, and the 5mm lovers cry and moan the 5mm being the best rimfire ever and about Remington leaving them in the lurch (discontinuing ammo, parts, and rifles). They do have a point, the 5mm Rem Mag was way ahead of its time, but the rifles were built the same as the 22 LR rifles, just different caliber. I guess people just didn't want to spend that kind of money for a rimfire back then.
Ammo is available once again. Is your friend interested in selling the action?

Per Remington, there were about 27,015 of the Model 591 and 24,728 of the Model 592 produced.
Reference - http://www.remington.com/products/ar...model-591.aspx and http://www.remington.com/products/ar...model-592.aspx For ammunition just search 5mm Remington Magnum Centurion. Hope this helps! Steve Mace
