45/70 brass spliting

i have marlin guide ss ported iam using winchester new brass with 405 grn bullet with 40 grms of reloader 7 and after one use about 10% of my brass has a little split in neck which i know not to use but why are they doing this

Modern Reloading has starting load AND max load at 34.0 grains of reloader 7 for 45-70 US Governemnt. I'd say you might be a little hot.

Closely inspect your brass...are there any other signs of high pressure???

I also hope you didn't use 40 GRAMS (grms???) of reloader 7, because that is equal to 617.29 GRAINS!!!!!!!! I'd say that would be a little compressed!!!!!!

40.0 GRAINS of R-7 is listed in Hodgdon's manual as MAXIMUM load for ruger/mauser high pressure guns. NOT intended for lever guns! Find another source for your loading data, back that charge WAY down, pull-down any loads left, don't attempt to fire any more of them. Unless of course you fancy a lever gun bolt sticking out of your forehead!
