date a K-22

A friend asked me to check on a gun his mother has inherited. It is a K-22, 6inch barrel, original grips. I think it is post-WWII...1945 to early 50's, but I'm not sure. The serial number is K 664xx. I've read there is a book that provides this information, but as I don't have any other S&Ws to look up, I hoped someone here might share the information. Thanks very much.

Not very long ago, I was curious as to what year a revolver was made. I called Smith & Wesson's 800 number, hit option #7, a gentleman answered and I told him that I was interested in finding out what year this particular gun was made. He asked me what the serial number was, I told him. He said "let me look it up". In less than 30 seconds he said it was made in 1958.

I was planning on being sold a book or something. This is the only time I've ever called S&W and I was really impressed how helpful he was. I'm not sure if I just lucked out and got the right person or what. Nonetheless, it was very reassuring that with all the calls they probably get a day he would politely take the time to lookup the information for me. Before ending the call I told him thank you very much and he replied "no problem, call us back if you need anything else".

Production date would be 1979, and it's most likely a Model 65-2. You can confirm that by swinging the cylinder out and looking at what's stamped on the frame inside the yoke cutout.

1948. Interesting - second 1948 K-22 we've had in the last few days. In the unlikely event that either you or Elkins45 is interested in selling, I'd be prepared to make you a very handsome offer on the gun (the production year is the same as mine, and I'd really like to have at least one revolver from that year).

Yes, that makes sense. Sorry, that was my oversight - I forgot the Model 13 is also included in that serial number sequence. The 13 and the 65 are basically the same gun, just blued and stainless, respectively.

Would be very near the end of 1982 - the last SN that year was 17D8900

I recently inherited a revolver from my grandfather. It is a .357 mag S/N S83XXX. I'm not sure what model it is. Any info would be great. Thanks!

Your .357 Magnum was manufactured in 1951-52, and the model is simply the same as the caliber " The .357 Magnum." This is the gun that became the Model 27 when S&W began assigning model numbers in approximately 1957. Your gun is known as a "5-screw" because there are 4 screws holding on the side plate (one hidden under the left-hand grip) and an additional screw in front of the trigger guard. Model 27s and (especially) the pre-model .357 Magnums are somewhat sought after - if it's in good condition you have a very special gun there.

Out of curiousity, any idea how many were produced in 1982?? The serial # is close enough to 8900 that I'd bet it were made in December, and I was born in December of that year. I'd like to figure out how many were produced during the year so I could get a per day average and see how close it is to my birthday.

I know I can order a certificate from S&W with production information for each serial #, do they state the exact date of production??

Thanks.

I am new to this forum and new to hand guns in general. I am needing some help in finding out some information about a S&W Revolver

The revolver was passed to me by my father.

It was given to him years ago by the wife of an ex police officer. She had it several years after his death and then passed it on to dad.

I was trying to date it and find out what I could.
6 shot
Front Sight
On the right side of the barrel is .... 38 S&W Special CTG.
Left side of the barrel .... SMITH & WESSON
A white pearl looking grip
Serial Number on the base of the grip is C 468323
Could someone ID this gun and info for me or is there a website I can go to for the information ?

Thanks

Serial numbers that year ran from 9D44501 to 17D8900 - I have no idea if each sequence was fully used, i.e., whether they went to 9D99999 before switching to 10D. Further complicating the issue is that the same serial number sequence was being used simultaneously for about 7 different revolver models. However, I think your logic is pretty sound, so if it were me I'd say the revolver was made in the same month I was born - i.e., that's my story and I'm stickin' with it.

I do not believe that the factory letter will give you an actual production date. It may give the exact date that the gun was shipped, but that's obviously not the same thing.

Almost certainly a Model 10, also known as the .38 Military & Police. The gun dates from 1960, and will have the model number stamped on the part of the frame that's exposed (the "yoke cutout") when you swing the cylinder out. I think you'll find that it's a Model 10 or 10-1 (same gun with tapered barrel or heavy barrel, respectively).

Help? Anyone able to look up another S&W oldie?

Hi, I just inherited a S&W 38 Special CTG, serial #S826XXX.
There is an additional "S" after the SN where it is stamped under the barrel. The number ends too close to the edge of the bottom of the grip to be included there. 1906 - 1909 - 1914 patent dates.

My father was a perfectionist and cherished his firearms so it's in mint condition. Inside of the barrel is like new.

Also was given all of his boxes of shells. Remington KleanBore 158gr. w/steel jacket. He taped the boxes, I am guessing to keep moisture from degrading them (?). Only he knows. One box of flat head lead.
How long to shells keep until they become unsafe?

Thank you

You have a postwar .38 Military & Police, the gun that became the Model 10 when they started assigning model numbers in 1957. Note that "38 Special CTG" is the cartridge the gun is chambered for (.38 Special), not the model name (CTG is the abbreviation for "cartridge"). The "S" prefix M&Ps were made from 1944 or 45 to 1948 in the serial number range S811120 to S999999 - they then started using a "C" prefix.

I don't know what the additional "s" might be - some earlier M&Ps that were returned to the factory to have a new (at the time) safety feature added were stamped with an "s" to indicate that the modification had been done, but your gun should have been manufactured after that new safety design became part of standard production.

1958, the range that year was K317823 to K350547.
