Grip Safety rattles

I have a Springfield Ultra Compact that is one of my 2 primary carry guns. The grip safety rattles on it - I think because it actually comes into contact with the hammer at the upper end of it's range. I noticed it today while walking the dog, then paid better attention around the house for a few hours. When at a normal walking pace, I don't notice it, but I do during activities that involve me being jostled around either cutting grass, hammering, etc. It's my summertime preference

Any suggestions about how to fix this? Do I need to change the grip safety? Do I need a gunsmith to quiet this thing down, because I can do some minor 'smith work, but I'm not familiar with the grip safety aspect of 1911s - yet.

Thanks!

First, I'd check the flat spring under the mainspring housing. this powers the sear, disconector, and the grip safety. Sometimes these get bent a little too much, trying for a lighter trigger pull, and don't put enough tensi0on on the grip safety. If this doesn't do it, and the safety is in fact hitting the hammer, you may need to remove a small amount of metal from the top of the safety.

If you are going to own 1911's get a copy of Jerry Kunhausen's book on gunsmithing the 1911. It's about the best money a 1911 owner can spend.

Jerry's books can be obtained from his publisher: http://www.gunbooks.com or Brownells: http://www.brownells.com

Wilson has a good book on working on 1911's too: http://www.wilsoncombat.com
