Looking for a affordable .22 AR platform
I asked the wife what she wanted and she told me .22 AR so here I am with a limited budget and a wife who wants a new gun.

I don't know much about them but the cheapest I could think of was the Mossberg model, but since the craziness began, it might not be so cheap anymore.
I went with the M&P 15-22 a few years back. Most fun rifle I own. |

The Mossberg 22AR and Smith&Wesson M&P15-22 are your choices under $500. Now you just have to find them in stock...

I love my M&P 15-22. It nice being able to go through 10 mags and not regret it one bit. Shot about 1000 rounds without a single failure. Pretty amazing.
I also shot a 1.5" group with 5 standard Federal rounds from 50 yards with an open sight. Considering my shooting ability it was certainly a miracle, but I was impressed. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD |

I looked into the mossberg plinker and from what I hear they are cheaply priced and cheaply made and accessories are hard to come by and I saw colts for 350 2 months ago but prices have sky rocketed. I saw a base model for 575 the other day. I guess I may be out of luck. I'll just have to wait for a gun show and maybe make a deal.

RS: if you have an AR-15, buy a dedicated .22 upper, i recommend the TacSol .22 upper
they are a bit pricy, MSRP $625, but i consider these .22 uppers to be the best, i got mine at a gun show on an "introductory" offer when they first hit the market for half what they are selling for now. |

@ jimbob- if he was asking for a non AR 22 rifle, I would have steered him to a Marlin or Savage. But the OP was asking about a specific type of rifle. Thanks for your helpful input.

I bought my CMMG AR15-22 from a local gun shop. He sold it to me for $450. It is a Standard CMMG lower with a dedicated .22 upper. I went this route incase I wanted to swap uppers. I also have owned the M&P15-22, it was a fun accurate rifle too.
Here is the link to the gunshop that had the CMMG. He used to sell a lot on gunbroker. I am not sure if he has anymore in stock, as I bought mine a year and a half ago, but he did have one or two pre panic. It is a little LGS, that has always been great to me.. http://spartagunsandammo.com/

Saw a NIB S&W MP-15 22 go on auction arms last week for $880!! So the madness is already in that market. IMO the Mossberg may look sort of like an AR-15 but that's about it. If you look at one close up I don't think you'll want to overpay for it at all. I wouldn't give regular retail for one.

The Mossberg looks and feels very cheap. I would go with the Smith and Wesson MP 15 22.

If your not stuck with a ar design might I suggest a $300 GSG 522. Bought mine at Dick's sporting goods on sale during the holidays.

Like others have said, you can't go wrong finding yourself a M&P 15-22. Arguably one of the best AR .22's on the market. Go find a couple of feel them out. You'll understand what we mean once you've held it and then be a true believer after you've fired it.

If this is for fun shooting it is IMO a big big waste of money buying a dedicated upper.
A .22 conversion can be had for $140 and from what I have seen using my S&W M&P OR and CMMG conversion I would have no problems taking out small game at .22 LR ranges. Target shooting I get 1-1.5 inch groups at 50 yards and 2-2.5 at 100. Save your money for ammo and a few extra mags.
