High Volume Shooting???
1. What quantity of shells per session would you consider "high volume"?
2. How many shotshells do you areveage in a year? 3. What gun(s) do you use? 4. Have you had any problems with your gun? If so was it a minor or major repair? 5. What is your record of shotshells fired in one day? |

I had Ray Oeltjen on the radio show a couple of weeks ago. He does the instruction on trap shooting on guntalk.tv, so i asked him how many rounds he had put through his Browning BT-99 trap gun.
Well, he said, he actually bought a second one, thinking he would wear our the first one. The first one is still going. It has about 450,000 rounds through it. The second one has about 250,000 rounds through it. Ray says he probably has show about 1.3 million shotgun shells. Kim Rhode told me that when she is training, she fires 1,000 rounds of 12-gauge ammo each day. Those kind of numbers put it into perspective when those of us who shoot 200 rounds on a Saturday talk about "heavy use." |

For me... Trap - 500 is a big day at the range, usual is about 250 (Browning Citori). Self defense loads and / or at the SASS range - 100 is a big day (Mossberg 500 persuader - I don't compete in SASS shoots, just use their range when it's empty).
Best guess is about 3,000 a year between what I mentioned above + upland hunting and turkey. Most in a day is probably around a thousand. I'm sure I'm not setting any records, but these days that pistol range starts calling me away... Edit: no problems whatsoever with the shotguns. |

Thanks for the reply's thus far.
1. I consider 1000 plus per session high volume shooting. 2. I average 15,000 - 18,000 per year. 3. Perazzi MX 14 w/ PFS stock 4. Two hammer springs. $30.00 each. Not too bad for 40,000+ rounds through the gun. 5. 1700 doubles. Hoping to hit the 2000 mark this season. In reguards to the second poster: I have shot with a fellow from Ohio that has registered over 1,500,000 trap target, but not with the same gun. Keep'em coommin' |

My 700+ torture test was all back to back no cool down 'cept during fast reloading! it was summer florida daylight and i was hoping to see a "glowing" barrel... It never glowed but my sweat that dripped on the barrel and frame near the barrel jumped off boiling like a cat on a hot tin roof! It was HOT! I cut down several pine trees during the torture test!

Over 150 per session would be high
Average about 17500 - 19000 shells per year Shoot a Browning BT-99 as primary gun with a Remington 1100 as a backup BT-99 forearm cracked when gun was a year old. Browning replaced under warranty. Remington has never had any problems. 300 shells is the most I've shot in one day. |

I shoot about 15,000 shells a year thru a variety of guns.
My primary Skeet and Sporting Clays guns are a Browning XS Skeet - in 12, 20, 28 and .410 ( all 30" barrels ) - separate guns - no tubes. My primary Trap guns are either a Browning BT-100 32" for singles or a Browning XT-Trap 32" with a GraCoil supressor for doubles or continental. Some of my guns are coming up on 20 years old / never had a problem with any of them. For me, shooting over 200 shells a day results in some bad moves and lack of focus. I'm much better off limiting my practice to no more than 6 boxes a day. |

1. I go to private land with a buddy and my girlfriend and shoot clay pigeons and other random targets. We generally use about 500 shells of Remington #7 1/2 plus a couple boxes of 00 buckshot.
2. I would say about 10,000 to 12,000 shells this year. 3. I have a Maverick 88 with an 18 1/2" barrel and my buddy another Mossberg with a full length barrel. 4. I have never had a problem at all. I can't speak for my shooting buddy though. I can say that he never had a problem when he was with me. 5. Probably 500 shells myself in a day plus about the same for my girlfriend since she uses the same gun. |

I've only been shooting regularly for several months--had to take time away from shooting for pregnancy+baby--so I can't say for a year. When I'm not too pressed for time or money, I top out at 150 or so per range session. Right now I'm on a strict limit of two boxes/day until next terms begins and I get a cash infusion for some reloading gear.
Since I joined a range and started shooting regularly in August, I've gone through about 2500 shells, shooting trap with a Benelli Montefeltro. In the spring, I'll probably get an adjustable comb put on it. I have had no problems with my gun, although before I got the Benelli I had a Rossi single shot 20 that had a lot of problems, mostly getting too hot too fast and shells getting stuck in the chamber. Just not designed for more than hunting-level volumes of shooting, I guess. I imagine I'll get a nice Krieghoff on the day I pay off my student loans! |

I shoot 150-200 shells most range trips.
Maybe 8K a year in target loads. Plus some waterfowl loads, buck and slugs. I use either 870s or a Beretta 686 White Onyx Sporter. I've replaced two firing pin springs in an 870. Not bad for nigh 50 years of use. Most shells, about 275-300. Mostly buck, some slugs. |
