.40 S&W, 165 Grain Rainier Plated Bullets, WSF Powder and Primers...
Anyone use this combo? I am going to go order bullets and I already have the primers. I am having a hard time finding powder that I want (unique) so I am going to get what is in stock. My sierra reloading manual says WSF is okay with a 165 grain bullet. I know I am supposed to reduce the load, and this is what I was going to do anyways.

I shot this combo many years ago, and I remember it shooting fine.
I don't shoot much .40 any more, but if I did, I think WSF and power pistol would be my 2 main go to powders. Good powders I've also used in 40 were HS-6, longshot, bullseye, and unique, depending on what you want out of the load.

cool, do you remember the load specifically? I just want to make a load to shoot for fun, accurate enough but mainly I just want to waste ammo.

Just started shooting 40 SW and WSF is a fine powder for 165 gr. bullets. I'd recommend a start charge at 5.9-6.0 grains for 950-970 fps up to 6.6 for around 1050fps. Best powder of the 4 powders I've tested but Unique and Power Pistol works very well too. Check other data sources for load data for WSF powder with 165 grain plated and jacketed bullets for your 40 SW.

Shot my first reloads today. I made two loads, 5.7ish grains up to 6.2ish. My goal for reloading the .40 is to bulk load with a single stage press. I was using the lee dippers but I was weighing each load just to be safe.
I was able to use the 5cc dipper to get 5.7 grains and the 3cc dipper 2x to get 6.2 grains. Both loads worked flawlessly. And I was hitting the target so hell ya. |
