45 colt 300 gr primer and H110 question

Guys i bought some 300 grain speer sp and 300 gr hornady hp-xtp bullets. My manual calls for 21.5-23.5 gr H110 with CCI magnum primers.

All I have on me are Winchester Large pistom primers (that are marked for standard and magnum.) Will it be ok to use the WLP with this data?

Also the Hornady data calls for 17.9-21.7 grains of Win296. I have heard that 296 and H110 are basically the same powder.

Will I be ok using the Win296 data for the H110 with the xtp?

One last thing. Does anyone have experience with these loads? I will be shooting them out of a New model Blackhawk 4 5/8 barrel.

Thanks

Yes, yes, and no.

Yes, you can use WLP's with those two powders, they work just fine.

Yes, you can use current W296 data with H110. The Hornady data sounds a bit conservative. Which manual did it come from?

No, I have no experience with those loads in a .45 Colt, but I do have a lot with loads for a .44 Mag with a 300 grain bullet using the same powders and WLP primers. I do have experience with .45 Colt loads using lighter bullets (up to 255 gr) and those powders and primers. If the experience is anything like the .44 Mag, you might be surprised by the recoil. It actually feels lighter than a similar load using a lighter bullet. In other words, it isn't unpleasant.

i got the data from "Loadbooks USA complete Reloading Manual for the 45 Colt". Which I believe was taken straight from Hornady.

Thanks

Those don't always use the most current data. What's the copyright date of the Loadbook?

Thanks for pointing that out. The copyright is 2004. I bought it recently at my local big box store (sportsmans wharehouse)

I will have to see if I can find some more current data from hornady.

Thanks again

Actually I asked the wrong question. Which edition of the Hornady Handbook are they using? It'll say on the page right before the Hornady load data.

I have a couple of boxes of 300 grain JHP and JSP that I tried in a 45 colt Marlin. They don't group very well compared to lead 250 grain bullets. My rifle just likes the lead bullets better due to being .003-.004 larger than the jacketed bullets. I, like Mal H have used standard primers for all those so called magnum powders, and they work just fine.

I shoot those same loads all the time in my RedHawk 4". I use Winchester large pistol primers as well and they do just fine. Expect some hefty muzzle flash.

I tried this data with my H-110, WLP primers, and 300gr XTP bullets. I didn't get consistent ignition until I got above 21.5gr. The lower charged cases didn't even develop enough pressure for the bullet to jump the crimp and leave the case. Just badly sooted the base of the bullet. YMMV.

My .02 cents, I'm running out of pennies!

My results are similar to what Sport45 said. FWIW, I am now loading Cast performance 335gr. bullets over 23gr of H-110 and the WLP primers seem just fine.

H110

Ive ben using nthat load in 2 Rossi Pumas and a redhawk. Ive tried both CCI LPMs and Wolf/Tula LPMs. Both work well, but the accuracy is better with the Wolf primers. In the Redhawk you need to crimp securley or expect an occasional misfire or hangfire. Good fireball in dim light. Accuracy in redhawk is good. Recoil is good too. Havent chronied the redhawk, but in the 20" Puma you get 1700FPS- this exceeds the 30-30 in horsepower! Ive used both 296 abd H110 with nearly identical results. The XTP is very terminal for whitetails.

I haven't gone quite as hot as ipscchef, but I have some 310 grain SWC loads using 21.5 grains of 296 and they do pretty well from my 7.5" Redhawk. I haven't had a chance to try them yet in my 4" Redhawk, but I imagine the fireball should be showy.

45Colt/300gr SPR-JFP/H110 . . . .

Hodgdon site (after all, it is their powder):
21.8-22.2gr/26,700-30,100psi (Ruger Only) Note OAL: 1.650"

Speer 13th (after all, it is their bullet):
21.1-23.5gr/974-1,156fps (Ruger Only) Note OAL: 1.640"

Do NOT seat this bullet deeper/at shorter OAL for these loads.

one small point

As component lots can and do vary, I suggest working upward during load development.
