hearing protection

is there any particular brand/type of muffs that are considered to be top of the line, or all they pretty much all the same. im very interested in saving the hearing that i still have.

Leightning (not sure of spelling) sold 31db muffs. I believe they have increased the db to 33 or more. I use these and recommend them. If I have to shoot next to muzzle breaks I will use 33db plugs under the muffs.

that is the brand that i have but im not sure of the rating on them. they seem to work ok, but if there was something better i would be all for it. i paid about $20-25 for mine, so i figured they were a cheapo set.

If you really want the best get electronic hearing protection so you can hear conversation and range commands when shooting. I recommend Pro Ears. You may occasionally want to add ear plugs when shooting with or near magnum loads or at the rifle range.

These babies are kind of like a play-doh plug. They tend to leave a little goo in your ear, but they are hands down the best earplugs I have ever seen. Even by themselves I'd bet they do a better job than a good set of shooting muffs. Together -with- muffs and you won't even notice that 500 Magnum going off next to you.

They're excellent for other non-shooting sound relief (sleeping, etc) as well.

Silencio - Mono or Stereo. They are excellent. I've tried most of the others but these are best for fit and finish and do the job perfectly. Silencio's website gives all the details but, from memory you have to buy from one of their approved retailers.

The best economical solution I can recommend is buying some disposal earplugs at the local pharmacy, and using them to suppliment your "big" ear protection device. I started this trick a few months ago, and it is surprising effective.

More economical than spending big bucks on ear protection, and it works!!

I prefer the Peltor Ultimate-10 for about $20, but the H. Leight models are good too. I use Remington plugs under them because my ringing ears need all the help they can get.

I have a pair of Remington M-31 muffs which look like rebanded Leightning 31s. Also for indoor or if any big guns are going to fired I have a pair of custom made ear plugs (which provide 38 db of protection) that I wear in addition to the muffs. A bit overkill, but after one trip to the range and having my ears ring for a couple of weeks I figured it was best to play it safe.
