Remington 878 disassembly instructions

I just wrote these off the top of my head for a friend in need, so forgive any mistakes.

I realized after I sent them to the friend that others may need them too.

Here you go:

1) Open the bolt and make sure it is NOT LOADED.

You will need: cleaning supplies, a small pair of channel locks or a nice sized pair of pliers, a decently thick shop rag to pad the channel lock jaws, a small hammer, a wooden golf tee, eye protection

2) Check to make SURE it is not loaded, again – no, really, do it.
3) Close the bolt and put the safety on.
4) Next step is to loosen the barrel retaining cap on the end of the magazine tube. It may be difficult, but try to see if you can do it with the fingers before you use any tools. Try pushing the barrel into the receiver as you turn. The barrel won’t move, but might relieve enough pressure to make the cap move. There is a detent with a spring behind the cap to keep it from turning, so it should make a “clicking” sound as you turn (you don’t want your barrel to loosen on recoil). IF NECESSARY, use the pliers or channel locks WITH THE PADDING in place to turn the cap. WATCH and be careful NOT TO MAR the finish on the cap. As soon as you get it to move, it will be loose enough for fingers, so use the fingers as soon as possible.
5) Once the cap is off, the barrel and foreend will move forward off the receiver as one unit. Once you clear the mag tube, they may start to want to separate. Separate them once you have them all the way off.
6) Pull the bolt handle straight out of the bolt and set it aside.
7) Take a look at the shell retainers (small fingers of metal poking out just a little behind the magazine opening. Make note of their orientation. Push the shell carrier up and perhaps even take a photo with your phone.
8) Use the small hammer and the golf tee to drive the two trigger group retaining pins out of the receiver (There are two, one larger than the other). The golf tee is important as it will not mar the finish of the pins or the receiver if you slip. Pull the trigger group down and slightly to the rear and out of the receiver. One of the shell retainers might fall out, thus the reason for the above photo. That is normal, you just need to know how to put it back together.
9) There is a long slot with a hole in the front, top of the magazine tube. There is a pin in the action bars that goes into the gas piston and travels in this slot. You have to get the pin to move forward to the “hole” in the slot, which is the only place you can lift the action bar out of the gas piston. You accomplish this forward movement by pushing in the shell retainer (mentioned above – the little “finger” of metal just behind the opening of the magazine). You will know when you push it in enough, because the bolt will just move forward.
10) Cover the end of the magazine tube with one hand. The gas piston is under spring pressure and will come flying out. You really should be wearing eye protection. Align the pin in the action bars with the aforementioned “hole” in the magazine tube slot. Pull up on the action bars. The gas piston will hit your hand when you have the pin out of the piston. Pull the piston and the action spring out of the mag tube.
11) Pull the action bars and bolt straight forward out of the receiver. You might have to push the shell latch in again to accomplish this. The bolt just sits on top of the action bars. It will just lift off once the whole thing is clear of the receiver.

You have now fully disassembled you gun. Clean it, and assemble in reverse.

Notes:
The ring on the outside of the gas piston can be removed, just do so carefully, so as not to break it.
If the right shell latch did fall out during dissassembly, the hole in it, must line up with the hole for the small trigger group retaining pin when reassembling.
