Need some input on an 1860 I found

Went to the gun show today and there is somebody selling an 1860 NIB for $200. The only markings I can find are under the ram rod - ASM 44 cal. There is a receipt in the box from 1986 and the receipt says CVA on it but I don't see any CVA on the box or gun. The gun is either polished steel or nickel plated, not really sure. Fake stainless as I call it. I am in the market for another 1860, is this a good deal or overpriced? The gun has never been fired. I am tempted to go back and buy it.

Think the ASM is the Italian ARMI SAN MARCO.

ASM made it. CVA imported it. It might be stainless, some of them were or it could be polished. If it is nickel the frame under it is probably brass.

Hawg, this may be a stupid question, but how do I tell if it is nickel plated?

Look for yellowish copper look that will show up on the exterior of the gun (and less polished areas).

Look in the hammer channel. Surely it has been cocked over and over, even if never dry fired, and if it did happen to be plated in there completely (not likely), then some should have rubbed off from being handled.

Thanks for all the info gents. Beagle those pics are very helpful. I am headed to the show this morning. If he still has it and it checks out to be a steel frame and not brass I will buy it and put up some pics.

Tell him 200.00 is too steep.

Offer 160.00

Cabela's occassionally has new 1860s (steel) for 199.00 plus shipping.

They have gone even cheaper but I am afraid those days are behind us.

ASM made some stainless 1860s in the early/mid '80s. The one
I have has a non magnetic barrel; a weakly magnetic frame, and a magnetic cylinder.

I went back today but it was gone. So what did I do? Came home with yet another 1911. I think I need help.

If I found ANY stainless Colt for $200 I'd just jump on it as long as it was easily fixable (broken hand spring, trigger or main spring).
