Serial Number Search

I have a friend who is in her 80's and she has her Dad's 38 S & W.
Serial # 524XXX

It has a patent dates Feb 8, 08 Sept 14, 08 Dec 28, 14 on the 4 inch barrel, has 4 screws on the side plate.

serial numbers are located on the butt of the handle and on the inside of the cylindar. Any ideas of the date of manufater?

I have a Model 64-1 that I believe was a turn in gun from the VA or NC State Police. It appears to be polished stainless w/Pachmayr grip and serial number 1D33XX.
1976.

Just wanted to date it.
Serial is 3102xx
If there is no "J" prefix then ~1963.

Dear Jim, may I abuse your patience too?
In 1976 sept. I bought brand new at local seller (Rome, Italy) a model 60 Chief Special with serial number R 1531xx but after 35 rounds it had a lock-cylinder breakage. S&W replaced for free the revolver with a serial number R 1472xx quite functional and flawless through all these years. I would like to know which year is the manufacture of both the guns (I wish mine wasn't prior to 1975). Thank you in advance for your kindness.

The closest the book shows is serial numbers ran from R100000 in 1974 to R190000 in 1977.

Serial numbers ran from C1 in 1948 to C223998 in 1951.

Cordell -

If your gun is a .38 special (it would say so on the barrel), it's a Hand Ejector M&P, 4th change, probably from the period 1915-20. I have a late 20s version of the same, I just found some hard black rubber grips for it on Gunbroker. In addition to rubber, they also came from the factory with walnut grips according to the Standard Catalog of S&W.

Note that the cylinder on your gun is NOT heat treated, that didn't start until serial #316648.

Serial numbers ran from 25K0001 in 1978 to 56K9999 in 1979. I would say yours is likely 1979.

Cordell,
Your serial number 2799XX makes it a 32 Hand Ejector 3rd Model. Serial numbers ran from 263001 in 1917 to 536684 in 1942.
Heat treating on this model started at SN. 321000 in 1920 so yours pre dates that.
To get an actually shipping date would require a letter from S&W.
Grips would be black rubber with the S&W monogram or walnut with a diamond around the screw escutcheon.
Best place to locate grips would be Gunbroker and Ebay.

1966 (starting at SN C810533 to 1967 (ending SN C999999), so probably '66.

SCSW doesn't appear to list any SNs starting with "3D" - 1D, 2D, and 4D up to 30D, (and even D3), but no 3D. And there's no gap in the sequence of years listed where "3D" would fit, i.e., the list goes right from 2D99999 (end of 1978) to 4D00001 (start of '79). Mod. 10-8 was introduced in 1977 and replaced by the 10-10 in 1988, if that helps.

Thanks FlyFish. That seems odd that there is no record. The number is stamped on the butt and is clear to read - 3D42xxx. Inside the number is stamped is MOD. 10-8. Also very clear to read. The barrel shows SMITH & WESSON on one side and 38 S.&W. SPECIAL CTG. on the other side. The gun is in good shape other than holster wear and a couple of numbers they etched/stamped on the side. Where do you suggest I look for more information?

kopsy: I agree it's a strange situation. Maybe someone else will jump in with an explanation, but we're all working from the same book and, unless I'm missing something, 3D just isn't there. Could be a typo, I suppose, and 1979 should really start with 3D instead of 4D, but I have no reason to believe that's the case. You could make a call to S&W and see what they have to say. My understanding is they're happy to give you the production date if you quote them the SN. If you do that, come back on and let us know what they say.

swsnub: late 1982.

1974. Close to the end of production for that year (at SN D659901).

Model 10? (Other possibilities are 12, 13, 14, 45).
