I'll pass along a link to Steve's Pages, which someone else recently posted in another thread. It has a ton of load data for all calibers, with lots of different powders for each.

I can't vouch for the data, but it may at least be a good starting place. Good luck! I'm also about to embark on my first 40 S&W reloading experience.

Keep us posted how it goes.

I would take a real hard look at LONGSHOT for your powder. The starting loads are generally faster than other powders Max loads. This powder is funny as it will give you a velocity peak at some point and more powder DOES NOT increase bullet vel. I have found 135gr Noslers loaded @ 1307fps from a 3.6" barrel in a KAHR CW-40 With 155gr Montana Gold 1230fps was peak vel. Be advised that Montana Gold bullets DO NOT EXPAND for crap so they are not for SD
BTW- Remington 5 1/2 primers gave 100fps higher vel than CCI or Winchester.

I load longshot in my 180g FMJ bullets
6.9-7.0g does nice....Longshot is not a quiet mild powder in 40

My cousin loads up 5.3 grains of bullseye under a 180 grain XTP for his M&P. I just checked alliant's webpage, and they list 5.5 as max for this powder/bullet weight combo. You might want to pop over to it and check it out-they list 5 different alliant powders. http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloade...rs/index.aspx&

I have also used blue dot and unique in the 40, all to good effect. Light unique loads don't seem to cycle the pistol well, so I find most of the 40 loads end up near the max loads listed in my Lyman manual.

Which alliant powder are you considering?

Wood,
I know you have an M&P, but i'm reloading 40's for my 4th gen Glock. Im using 155gr LRN over bullseye powder. Just started reloading and reloaded some 4.5gr and some 4.9gr. Niether one of them cycled or fed properly. Just FYI. But I do like the bullseye powder. Im working on loaded some 5.5gr now.

My best load so far with Unique is 6.1 gr. Cycle reliably and is pretty accurate. This is with a 170 gr hard cast lead bullet.

Woody, I have M&P40 and my favorite target load for 180 gr is 3.8-4.3 gr W231/HP38 at 1.125" OAL. At 3.8-4.0 gr, it is very light recoil load (lighter than 9mm) that is dead-on accurate. At 4.3 gr, it is mild recoil very accurate load. Try these loads out. The 3.8 gr load is below starting load and if you experience any slide cycling issue/stove pipe, bump up the charge a bit.

Load data from Hodgdon website:
Quote:
180 GR. HDY XTP Winchester 231 OAL 1.125" Start 4.1 gr (797 fps) - Max 5.0 gr (947 fps)
As to other Alliant powder, I have tested Green Dot with similar results but you need to use 0.2-0.3 gr more compared to W231/HP38.

BTW, Montana Gold 155 gr is my match bullet.
