Picked up an Universal M1 Carbine last weekend thinking I had a great deal. That was till I took the thing to the range. Couldn't get 2 round down range without a jam. Thanks again to George, the Smithy here at TFL, I'm happy to say I did get a deal on this carbine. The guy I picked up the M1 from must not of had the help we have here if we need it. Talk about needing a little TLC. Ford was still in office the last time this rifle saw a true cleaning. After a complete stripping, dunking in Hoppe's and wearing out a brush or two, success!! Last night at the range 200 rounds went without a hitch. My 5 shot groups at 25 yds were a cloverleaf and the young man who'll be using this rifle in a action rifle shoot stayed in the 6" black. A happy ending.

An M1 Carbine that got too dirty to fire?
Dang - that was one dirty M1! I have heard from one fellow that said he has fired litterally thousands without cleaning.

Hmmmm Maybe it's the same gun
George, Are you the same G.H1ll in Joe Garner's book: CODE NAME: COPPERHEAD?
I made the connection after reading your comments about putting on a flak vest just before catching one in the sternum.
