Anyone Here Reload any of the big .50s ?
Not the .50 BMG but the smaller .50s
.50 Alaskan .50 AE .50 Beowulf .500 S&W or my favorite, the .499 LWR ??????? I am currently testing 6 different loads of 6 different powders and the Rainier 335 gr bullet for the .499LWR, these consist of 60 rounds to be fired from two different barrels, one a SS Lothar-Walther, the other from a different steel from Lothar-Walther, not certain of the make up but it is NOT SS, i'll post the results in about a week after i get the data all compiled. I am a newbie here so let me present my credentials, I have been shooting for over 56 years, reloading for 50 years, spent 25 years in the U.S.Navy, shot on some Navy teams, M1 National Match rifle and service grade 1911s, i also had about 20 years reloading 12ga. and shooting match skeet and trap, i once had a 1,500 round trap score running, i am just an ordinary good ol boy who loves guns, shooting and reloading, i enjoy helping new shooters get a better grasp on their chosen sport. |

I've done a little for the 50 AE... I'll need to do a little expirementing coming up, as about a year ago, my buddy completed a custom for me... 44 Mag Marlin lever action, converted to 50 AE... so I'll be looking at possibly some slightly slower burning powders & heavier cast bullets... I'd like to expiriment some with cast bullets in my Automag 5 as well...
also have an interesting revolver, that we made using a scrap of the left over barrel, & an old blackhawk revolver... it is chambered for a 50 AE Case, trimmed a few .000's & head spaces on the case mouth like a 30 carbine blackhawk, it's designed around bigger cast bullets, & the overall cartridge length is the same as the A.E. but the cast bullets hang out of the case further

500 S&w
For mine two revolvers I use a Ballisti-Cast #1454 linotype 365 grain cast bullet powered by 15.5 grains of Unique. Works beautifully!

KLW,
did you know the dies for the .500 S&W Mag. can be used to reload the .499 LWR ?? the carbide ring in two of my RCBS .499 LWR sizing dies cracked, i sent them in to RCBS along with some fired brass and unfired brass, RCBS told me there was a slight discrepancy in the dimensions on file and what i sent back for their tech. staff, so untill they get the proper size figured out they are sending me a set of .500 S&W steel dies to get back in the action, i hope they arrive today. RCBS people are some really great people to talk to and are very helpfull.., especially Jeannie, she is a real sweetheart !! |

I load for my 50 Beowulf using AA’s listed load for the 334gr JHP, but my rainier bullets are 335gr JHP’s (I think this is what AA uses). Shoots real good. I would recommend a good recoil pad to anyone interested in shooting a 50 Beowulf.
