Thread a .708" OD barrel?
I have a 7.62x39 rifle with a .708" OD barrel. I would like to thread it to rcv various AK or AR muzzle devices....AK preferred. Is there a die available for this OD...24mm RH preferred. I have several different stocks but would need a bore guide.

Large diameter precision threading is best done on a lathe.

no lathe
Well I don't have a lathe available...if I did I would mill the barrel to a standard size and buy or rent a kit. I'd like to try and thread it myself to start the learning curve...always wanted to try. I stay with the tried and true for life on the line, SHTF pieces...this isn't one of them.

die
Sir;
I think there are dies made for this. However, your muzzle must corespond to the "major diameter" of the thread selected. Getting that die started straight is important - a square, or die stock with a centering device would work also. The barrel must go through the headstock of the lathe to thread it properly. Your barrel is smaller than 18mm, hard to get 24mm threads. I agree with brickeyee, threading a barrel without a lathe is almost impossible to get proper alignment.
If you want to learn more about machining buy a Machinist Handbook. Practice on scrap so you don't make scrap out of you barrel. When I thread barrels I do not put then through the headstock. I use a plug for the breach and muzzle and run it between centers. |
