Okay, I'm camoing my 870. But how to clean it once spraypainted?

Hey guys,

I'm in the process of camouflage painting my 870 express. I've already stripped it down and primered it.

But now something occurrs to me... what's the best way to clean it after hunting or shooting skeet?

Normally with my shotguns I just spray 'em down with Birchwood Casey's gun scrubber. Now that I think about it, I figure this method will strip my fancy new paint off :-(

Any tips on how to clean without removing the paint?

Thanks!

Why would you use Gun Scrubber on the outside of the gun?

Clean your barrel, then wipe down the outside with something simple like Remoil or similar

Hmm... yeah I'll have to do something like that I guess.

Normally I take the barrel off (trigger assembly out, bolt, etc.) and spray up in the receiver. This would produce a lot of run-off that would get on the paint.

I guess I could leave the barrel on and let the scrubber run down it too.

Or, just soak a patch and swab around up inside the receiver.

Probably overthinking this :-)

ETA: No I don't normally spray the outside of the gun.

Yep. Just clean as normal and wipe down the exterior with a dry cloth. No oil needed since the paint is now protecting the finish. Over time cleaning solvents and wear will cause some paint to wear thin or even come off. That is when it is time for another can of Krylon and a touch up.

When you get tired of your paint coming off you could consider Alumahyde II or duracoat or cerakote and bake it. No worries about the gun scrubber taking it off then. Just make sure you tape up what you don't want sprayed so everything fits back together.
