Garand v. Mosin
I find the M-1 rifle very pleasant to shoot and equate it to a full sized adult 20 ga shotgun.
One of the most miserable kickers I've shot was a Mosin with "heavy ball", yellow tip MG ammo. The short stock and heavy bullet beat me up. There is an in depth conversation going on with another thread regards loading M1 compatible ammo...."hunting Garand".....I think. I was at a 3 gun match recently where I shot the M1....for grins mostly. A late 20's yr old shooter asked me...."what kind of rifle is that?" and I was floored, I thought everybody knew what a Garand looked like. Glad to see we have young shooters interested in the old war horse. |

Ordering Sight Unseen = Service or Special Grade Ordering a Field Grade is a risky proposition, especially if it's your first CMP order. For every beautiful Field Grade you see posted on the internet, you can bet there are at least a dozen that never get posted for obvious reasons. Depending on where in NC you live, a trip to the South Store might prove to be a fun father/son adventure. Just something to think about. |

It's in Anniston, Alabama. I doubt We'd be able to drive there. I think I'll be able to get a Service grade online, so I think I'll be getting a good rifle.

Well, turns out I can't get one.CMP emailed me and Even if I provided my marksmanshin related activity and my club membership proof, my dad would have to provide his own. Well, it was fun while it lasted. Probably just get a Yugo Mauser or something. Thanks for your help and support guys.

Well... thats a bummer. Look for an m27 mauser if youre looking for a cheap one and stay away from mitchells.

Something you can try for when you do meet their age requirement!
I got one digression from just about everyone elses statements on recoil. It does leave a bruise on my shoulder! I'd put it at not as bad as shooting 3 inch mag shells thru a 12 guage, but it definitely helps put hairs on yer chest. Ammo selection, gonna be spendy. If you are looking to reload, I would gladly send you my spent brass to help get you started once you get a Garand. There are some bulk options that are specifically for a Garand, I found them thru Cabelas. But its .80/rd, and at 500 rd cans, thats a pretty penny! Before the ammo/gun apocalypse, I was able to find 500 rds for about half that price. Accuracy, I have good days and bad days, and its all due to my deficiencies. There are two groups I am proud of, first was done with the guidance of a good friend who coached me on trigger and breath control, and I got about 4.5" group at 100 yards, with 1 flyer. The second group on my last shooting session, I did at 50 yards, a 1.5" group. My eyes are not so clear as they were 10 years ago, so shooting with iron sights is challenging for me. My Garand is my favorite gun, and I will never sell it.

I doubt they'll be any Garands left by the time Im 18, so no need for the brass or anything. I went and shot my K-31 today to get my mind off of it, and I realized I really dont need another rifle, I'd probably get more use out of some reloading equipment for the calibers I already have. Plus I'm already getting my new Savage sometime soon.

If you shoulder the rifle properly, it wont leave a bruise, and recoil is more of a push than a kick. Its actually quite pleasant compared to some of the bolt guns of the era.

Don't give up on the CMP.
As others will tell you it's one of the best places to buy a Garand, if you do have any issues with a rifle their customer service will make it right. It looks like your dad is only short in two areas. If your dad is game, download this form: http://thecmp.org/wp-content/uploads/marksmanship.pdf Take it a range with a range officer that is willing to observe your dad. (This is what I did.). Go through the steps and have the RO sign it. Then set him up with a membership to the Garand collects association. http://thecmp.org/wp-content/uploads/GCAApp.pdf Then mail off the first form and his garand collectors association member number and he is good to go. Just remember when you send in the paperwork for the rifle to get the order-form notarized. |

A CMP M1 is definitely the way to go.
The risk of getting a shot-out dog or a bad-parts mixmaster from a gunshow is just too high. Plus, the gunshow M1s are always over-priced. You might luck out at a LGS, I saw it happen once, but I'd still buy my first Garand from the CMP. Just be sure Santa also pops for a period-correct bayonet ... Good luck! CMP Winchester SG. I know you are looking to get one, but circumstances aren't right currently. But I'll throw my two cents in, just because.
Get a Service grade, or bump up to the Special. I bought a special, as I wasn't concerned with getting a period correct rifle. I wanted one that would shoot, and the new barrel made me feel like the extra money was worth it. It is essentially a brand new rifle. New stock, new barrel, and all the finishes are perfect (in my opinion anyway). I opted for the garandgear ported plug (versus the Schuster adjustable), so I could shoot the same ammo that I hunt with (Remington 150gr CoreLokt PSPs). I was worried about the availability of ammo that was spec'd for Garands, but that was unfounded. Federal makes some to replicate M2 ball, under their American Eagle brand. I've had mixed results with it. It doesn't have enough umph behind it to cycle with the GG plug. I also have a problem on the first shot out of the clip with it cycling all the way on the stock plug. It's accurate enough, although I think the CoreLokts group slightly better (but that may just be a bias I carry). I know it seems like it won't happen, but keep at it. It's a rifle you won't regret spending the time and money to get.

What about checking for a club within driving distance that sponsors CMP matches.
Many clubs have Garands to loan for the shoots. Owning your own is certainly better but getting to shoot one comes in a close second. And don't be put off by the word Competition. It's just a group of people getting together to enjoy time at the range shooting their Garands. Nobody cares what you score as long as you're safe and having fun.
