Sorry guys for the dumb question but what is a "squib" round

Usually it's a primer fired round, resulting a bullet lodged in the barrel of a firearm. The powder was left out of the loaded case.

... or the case had powder but it failed to ignite completely if at all. Some squib loads will end up with unburned powder everywhere, in the chamber, in the barrel, on you. Invariably the next round will not be a squib load, so if you don't catch it in time ....

Squibs make a different sound, from what I've read (great, more 2nd hand info)... and theres that deal where no hole is poked in the paper.

About a year ago I was shooting with 5 or 6 friends at a private indoor range. We had the place to ourselves, a really great deal as this was a weekly activity for us for a couple of years. One member of the group was having trouble with squibs, they were all too common for him for a while. Many bullets got stuck in the barrel of his Colt .45ACP. Once, while he was shooting at a silhouette target suspended from the carrier 7 yards away, we heard the unmistakeable sound of a squib load. The 200gr LSWC hit the paper and fell to the floor below the target. It moved the target but there was NOT A MARK ON THE PAPER! One of those you almost have to see to believe. He has since corrected the problem (replaced his press with a Dillon 550B) but he still gets some [color=#FF0000]█[/color][color=#FF0000]█[/color][color=#FF0000]█[/color][color=#FF0000]█[/color][color=#FF0000]█[/color][color=#FF0000]█[/color] from those of us who were there.

I got some good laughs just composing this post.

There are 2 definitions of a squib round.
[1] A round that does not fire and most of the time ends up stuck in the barrel.
[2] A Rifle round that is loaded DOWN for a special purpose. Most often a postol powder is used to produce a given velocity.

When SAC used to have ORI's (Operational Readiness Inspections) one of the things that was checked was they took some of the score cards of troops that had qualified as Expert and brought them to the range to shoot the qualification course (to see if they had really qualified that high or had qualified with the 38 caliber pencil).

During one inspection the amount of squibs was unreal ............. dozens of them 2 out of every 3 rounds it seemed. Some bulets would stick in the forcing cone locking up the revolver, some would not even make it out of the cylinder and of course there were 2 bulged barrels. In one case there were 2 squibs in a row and both were stuck in the barrel but no damage to the revolver.

CEASE FIRE, clear and ground all weapons ................... The inspectors called the whole thing off.

Later we were checking on the lot of ammo used and fellows get THIS..............it was marked "for Combat use only, not to be used for qualification purposes".

Of course this was during the Robert S. McNamara :barf: (guess what we said the S stood for?) days and we figured that the DOD figured it was good enough. What's a few personnel losses due to bad ammo?:barf: :barf:
