Any recommended powders from Hodgdons?

I almost fell over when I saw that my preferred powder stockist now has Hodgdon powders too!!!!

What is this strange thing called "choice"?
What do I do with it, now that I have it?!?

Although I am very happy with VV powders, previously my only option, I am open to new experiences.

Any good Hodgdon powders for .44 Mag, .44, Spl, .38Spl or .308?

Are they better than N110, N135, N350 or N320?
If so why?

I like IMR powders for my .308. IMR4064 specifically. IMR4895 works as well. I know I've seen loads using H4895 for .308. I think Hodgdon puts out CFE223. If they have it, I'd probably try it out for the .308. I've been trying to find some of it to try out due to velocities listed for the powder.

H110 for the .44 mag. Any of the shotgun powders for .38, .44 spcl and light .44 mag. like Red Dot, Clays, Unique etc.

if I could only have one it'd be Universal

Quick grab Universal (for mediums in each cartridge; like Unique, except better) and H110, which will exceed the velocity potential of N110.

And HP38 is W231, which is a superb choice for target-level 9x19, 38 Special, 44 Special, and 45 ACP.

"Better" is too subjective. Instead consider "more appropriate for the chosen goal".

And you simply cannot have too many or too much powder.

HP-38 is a great and versatile pistol powder. Perfect for 38 sp and works well with 45acp and 9 mm as well. I started reloading pistol with a 4 pounder of VV-N320 for 45acp and 9mm, mainly because it was what was available at the time. I like it but I am just about out and I am switching over to HP-38 (same as Win-231 by the way) because I can use it effectively for all my pistol calibers and, less importantly, it is cheaper. If they have it, get some. You will not regret it.

I have been finding a lot of hodgdon powders lately. I use PB and longshot in .40.. H110 in 357/44mag... Benchmark and h322 in .223. Hodgdon distributes some really decent powder.

Agree with several others.

H-322 for .223
HP-38 for 44 and 38 special
H-110 for .44 and .357 mag

Many like Varget for .308 but I prefer 4064, either IMR or AA

That got my attention!!

Although it is more expensive than VV pound for pound, it is sold in 454gr tubs (1lb to you lot) which are cheaper to buy in one go than the 1kg tubs of VV powders.

Regrettably, I don't see H110 listed, and the only Universal I can see is Universal Clays. Same thing?

In fact here is the full list from the shop's website

The main reason to buy these powders here is the price. HP-38 is great in .38 special and 9 mm. H110 works well in magnum loads. If you are getting a good price compared to the VV powders it might be time to give them a try.

I would give Varget a go in 308 if you can not find your preferred powder.

I loaded up some rounds for my Grandson's 308 using IMR3031 and 165 grain bullets. Can't argue against 4064 and Varget. 4064 works well for me in the 30-06.

Sometimes they sell a little.
But by the time I get there on the phone, I am told the web site crashed with so many people trying to buy it.... and it was all gone in 5 minutes.

ive only been reloading about 1 year and hodgens is all i have ever been able to find, i use H110 for full power mag loads, HP38 for just about everything small pistol, titegroup for jacketed 38 and 9mm, h335 for 223

hp38/w231 seems to be a must try for most pistol loads

also use hs-6 for heavier pistol loads, i dont have experience with other brands(except for one time with imr4064), so obviously i have been very happy with hodgens products

Universal is the same thing as Universal Clays, yes. It was my go-to powder for 9 and 45 until people caught on to it.

I really like IMR 4064 with the 168 and 190 gr projectiles in .308.

4350 and 4831. Older powders but still good to go in 308

H110: I never liked it. Maybe I loaded it too hot back in the day. 2400 was what I settled on, a lot of people swore by H110. I never got it to shoot well in Rugar or S&W.

I think Universal is a 'must try' for the .38 spl and .44 spl and light loads in their magnum counterparts.
It's bulky like Unique.
It's a single base powder that burns a little cooler and makes less smoke with lead bullets.
It meters very well.
Works great in 9mm and .40 too.

OK, another important question:

How well do these meter through the likes of either the Lee Auto-Disk Pro and the Perfect Powder measure?

A powder that can be used, with consistency & accuracy in the auto-disk could be well worth looking into also as that would resurrect my turret press' ability to load complete cartridges with 4 pulls of a lever!

In my experience, with the Lee Pro Auto Disk, HP38 meters very well, Universal nearly as well. IMR4895 is okay, it is a stick powder and I do get some variance from the disk set up. Universal is one of my favorite pistol powders!

No Hodgdon powder?

Is this because you are not able to find any or? I just got off the phone with two shops I have near me and they have and can get Hodgdon powders pretty much when they order it. Scarce is one thing, not selling it anymore is another. That scared the bejabbers out of me when I read that.

HP-38 meters very well in the Lee auto disk. I get very consistent drops with it.

HP-38 does measure very well in any type of volume powder measure I have tried so far. I believe it was designed for .38 special loads. If not, it should have been.
