For those with a LNL Case Activated Powder Drop...
Solved the "mystery", but just thought I'd pass it along in case it might save someone else some head-scratching down the road.
Finished building my son's .260 a couple of weeks ago. SS Savage Varmint action, CBI bull barrel, AICS... (I need a Dad like me ) Loading rounds for the first OCW trip to the range, the "middle" size powder drop says it's for calibers up to .270... So, I'm using this in my AP Progressive and I can feel something "sticking"...and every couple of charges powder spills out all over the place. I keep scratching my head, can't figure it out. All I know, is it's getting late- and I'm sick of cleaning up powder spills. Most of my reloading is 7mm and up with the shortest sleeve, but I do have a 6.5 Grendel that I've never had an issue with reloading, so I was puzzled. Long story short- I finally figure out that the hole in the powder sleeve just is not large enough for the extruded H4350. It just was not dropping freely through the sleeve into the case. That is, until I lowered the ram...and the rest spilled out freely all over the shellplate. Problem solved, with the drill press, and (I forget what size I used...) bit to open up the "hole". The 6.5 Grendel, with identical case mouth size, never had an issue because it's fed 8208 XBR ball powder. Now that I've "opened it up", I need to buy another sleeve so that our .223/5.56 cases won't get stuck in the now-enlarged sleeve opening. Just something to keep in mind...

Thanks for the tip.
I assume you dumped all the powder from the sticking cases before your mods? VL |

Sure thing.
I really like the temp insensitivity of the extruded powders like H4350- but this was just one more "negative". We all know they meter like crap by volume, if only H4350 and Varget were ball powders.... hey, I can dream...

I had to drill out one of the sleeves for AA5477 to flow freely. It would bridge up. I don't trust it and don't buy that powder any more.

It was the small powder sleeve for the .223 that I opened up...
Now that the "drop" opening has been enlarged, it won't work for .22 cal anymore- the case neck is small enough to get stuck in the now bigger opening.

See page 13:
http://www.hornady.com/assets/files/...owder-Drop.pdf Longest of the three (for shortest cases) is pistol powder sleeve. Middle size for .20 cal to .270 Shortest sleeve for 7mm and larger.

What is "middle" size, relative to the set, is actually "smaller" size for rifle. Last edited by Real Gun; April 18, 2014 at 08:17 AM. |
