Loading 9mm cast with Clays

I am looking for some info on loading 9mm cast bullets with Clays. I've only found load data for a couple of bullets. I have some 147 gr RNFP-BB that I am looking for load data on. I was wondering if anyone with the Lyman cast bullet book could give me some info. I'm just starting to try out loading cast. Thanks

The Hodgdon web site loading data section doesn't have any info on that combination.
That usually means it's not recommended.
I've used that bullet with their 231/hp38 powder with success.
But then they don't list that combo, anymore, either.
Hmmm??
They do have info for Titegroup, and Titewad, though.

The guy I got the bullets from looked them up in his lyman cast manual and they gave load data for them with clays. I lost the info on them that I wrote down, and can't reach him right now because he is out of town for a while. Was looking to load some up this weekend.

This web site has cast bullet loads:
http://www.castpics.net/project2/Cas...php?start=6261
Lots of combinations, including the 147 and 231.
But, you guessed it, apparently not the one you want, of course.
It's worth a look.

Just checked my Laser-cast manual, (hard cast boolits) no data with Clays and the heavy bullet 9mm loads. Whatever you do, be careful as the charges are gonna be tiny, somewhere in the sub 3 gr. area. For example, the heaviest bullet using Clays is 124 grs., 3.2 gr. MAX! Personally, I wouldn't load Clays with 147's, but it's your call. And I care about you.

I remember the load range was 1.9 to 2.8. I'm not gonna push my luck with out actually seeing reliable data. I'll just stick to 115 or 125 gr RN. Thanks

Good show. I like 147's also, (my carry loads are 147 Fed HST's) but usually load 147 gr. cast boolits with Unique or WSF to the HST load's velocities for practice. Wouldn't have probs with 231/HP38 either. Just not much room for error with Clays, Titegroup, BE, etc. with heavy bullets.

If you can use the cast load Data, the lyman 49th list Clays in a 147 cast RNFP as follows...

Caliber=9mm Luger
Lyman bullet mold=#356637 http://www.lymanproducts.com/lyman/b....php?entryID=6
Weight= 147grn cast
powder=Clays
Suggested start grains=1.9 velocity=669 fps 21,000 c.u.p.
Max load= 2.8gr +(=compressed load) fps=873 pressure 32,700 C.U.P.

What is the C.O.L. for that bullet/load? I knew there was some data for it somewhere. I might load a couple to see how they do. Thanks for the info.

Well now that is the funny thing about using cast data including OAL for plated rounds or FMJ for that matter as cast can call for a much shorter OAL than the needed for the plated counterpart. YMMV.That is why I didn't list it but it is 1.058" from the Lyman 49th. You may need a longer OAL. If so and the bullet is obviously too deep, do a plunk test and start with 1.150" and go from there. Let us know how it goes !
