Funny thing is, I really don't have a preference on this. I guess with my training (Bujinkan) I lean toward the tanto, but I lean just as strongly toward the Bowie. I just like my knives to be sharp and have a sturdy point.

Such an open question... so I picked "Other" as tanto points aren't aesthetically pleasing, IMHO, and not as useful for general purpose EDC (every day carry) knife as certain other points. Of course it depends on what you do every day... I suppose if self-defense is the primary reason for carrying the knife, you could do worse than a tanto point.

Historical tantos did not have "tanto" points. The strength for penetration can be designed into the point without the sharp angle in the blade. In ordinary use the apex area of the blade is likely to be overused and dull rapidly. Repeated use and sharpening will round out the angle unless one is careful to preserve it.
I think it's a fashion statement, not a functional feature. Bentley |

I tend to side with ICBently. In looking at antique swords and shorter blades from the far east, the tanto point looked much different than what is presented as that style today. I think it was more of a drop point than the sharp angle point we see now.
