Germany Replaces G36 With HK417

After numerous problems with the G36, Germany is replacing a number of them with the HK417 until a new infantry rifle can be selected. The HK417 in 7.62x51 is the current issue DMR for German infantry.

Wonder why the caliber change, 7.56 for 5.56 and not the 416 rifle? Curious.

It's just 600 rifles going to troops in combat zones. Considering the desire for longer-ranged rifles in open engagements in Afghanistan, and the fact that the G36's problems are only truly manifested at longer ranges, it makes sense.

They are not changing the G36 for the 417. They are just supplementing certain units in the Bundeswehr. It is designated G27P. Because the KSK already had it in inventory, they could purchase without som public tender. What I find a little strande about this is the fact that the G28 is already purchased as a DMR and Patrol version, last topped with a S&B 1-8.

Didn't they just hand off a bunch of G36 rifles to the Kurds fighting ISIS?
Oops.

WeaponsMan had a good write-up on his blog. I recommend his blog on a daily basis, for so many reasons.

Not a replacement

Oops.
But of course, if the Kurds didn't get enough 5.56 ammo to overheat the G36, there is no problem
