Would you buy a gun chambered in .45 GAP?
I started this thread because I'm starting to see guns chambered in .45 GAP show up on the shelves of gun stores in my area. I know a few state police agencies use it, unless they dumped it recently for a more common caliber. I also heard a few smaller police departments use it as well. Is .45 GAP finally starting to catch on or is it still dying out?

It might be ok if you are going to reload your own ammo for it.
Otherwise, as Airforce sez, why make trouble for yourself. Guns that are hard to get ammo or parts for just add to the hassles of life.

Ammo availability was one of my big concerns since I don't reload. I shot a G37 in the past and it was a nice shooting pistol. It's a shame .45 GAP is so rare.

Rumor has it that the Glock 45gap was a way to have a 45acp like gun using their standard frames.
Shortened .45 auto calibers have been around for quite awhile. Some countries that issued .45acp to police and military didn't allow the same ammo for civilians. Maybe that's where Glock got the idea.

#1 I don't like the guns it comes in. #2 I already have .45acp and have had for over 45 years. So, for me, there's NO point. #3 see #1 Its a niche round, it hasn't "taken the LEO community by storm", like the .40S&W. And I seriously doubt it will. And, because of this, its only going to get more hard to find, and expensive, as times goes on, and what little demand there is, fades away.

The Georgia State Patrol, which is obviously very fond of Glock, and in some cases, probably a little too cozy with the, recently went from the .45 GAP back to the 9mm.
I agree that the .45 GAP was an answer to the question that no one asked. A Trooper pal of mine said "The idiots at A-Troop finally sobered up. And promptly started drinking again." He's a .40 S&W kinda guy.

Only if the gun and ammo were really cheap... Which they're not. Well the guns are because nobody wants them.

I have one as my duty sidearm and think it's idiotic. The whole grip size issue in my experience is specific only to glock. If you want the 45 carry the real 45.
I guess if you're a dyed in the wool glock fanboy maybe you would get it but as pointed out its an answer looking for a question. |

I like Glock, but I wouldn't exactly consider myself a fan boy. Lol

Naw
Why get something thing that's made to perform like the original when you can get the origiinal? Same goes for the .357Sig.

Maybe a penny on the dollar. I do not have a desire for it just as I do not for a .40 caliber or a 10mm.

It's been out for years now and whenever someone talks about .45 Gap, I have to do research to remind me what the point of this cartridge was. Every time I look it up, I come to the same conclusion "Oh, yeah - same thing as 45acp, just a bit smaller". Then I completely forget about it. Why? Because no one makes a really small gun chambered for 45 GAP and I like 9mm, 10mm and 40S&W better anyway. |

No. I see no reason for it. Glock's biggest fail!

The Georgia State Patrol dumped theirs after a brief experiment and went to G-17's. There were only a handful of LE agencies who tried them and I suspect they will be doing the same if they have not already. I expect to see a lot of LE trade ins show up. |

And if I may...
For the sake of us reloaders, please don't buy pistols in 45 GAP, 9mm Mak, or 380 ACP. This concludes my public service announcement. |

Nope.
All my caliber/cartridges are common stuff. I have no specifics that require anything out of the norm. Someone at the show stated they got a Weatherby Mark V rifle at a really good price. The first thing that came to me was…… is it a Weatherby Caliber? He ended up getting rid of the rifle. |

.45 GAP wasn't an answer to a question not asked -- the question was "why not offer a .45 that fits smaller hands and people who can't really handle SA guns or 1911s". Since then, they've arguably found better answers, but for a while it was the only answer for those who just couldn't or wouldn't use a 1911 or revolver that would shoot that round.
Would I buy one? Yes. I got one that was ANIB and unfired, and got it cheap from someone who needed cash. I doubt I would have paid full price for one; I was more curious than needy and had another .45 at the time. I've had that Glock 38 for a while now, and it's the most pleasant, softest shooting .45 I've owned and I like it a lot. I recently sold a SIG P220 Super Match, because I found that I could shoot the Glock 38 better in more situations, and found it almost as accurate if shooting from a rest. (Were I shooting IDPA, I know I'd do better with the Glock than the P220 SM...) Ammo is harder to find and a little more expensive, but I tend to buy in bulk from Georgia Arms, and their .45 GAP is generally about the same price as .45 ACP. Home/Self Defense ammo is about the same for either caliber, and not cheap, but I don't shoot a LOT of that. There are other rounds out there that are equally "niche" rounds -- like 10mm and .38 Super, and a number of revolver rounds. But they hang in there. If it happens that .45 GAP is no longer made, I'll just run a different slide on the frame, but I suspect I can get ammo from places that reload (like Georgia Arms) for years to come. If ammo ever got impossible, it wouldn't be hard for a gunsmith to re chamber to fit .45acp.
Or for the truly dedicated reloader to shorten 45acp brass.

I would be willing to buy one but I have yet to find one cheap enough. As difficult as the ammo is to find I refuse to pay as much for it as a Glock in a more readily available caliber.
