Young Muzzleloaders

After school today my 8 year old Grandson asked to go shoot the flintlock.
He will be using this rifle while sitting with me or his Daddy on the Deer Opener.

Very cool, I'm slowly introducing my 6 year old to Archery & firearms & she already loves the out doors.

It make me very happy to see young ones take an intrest in the sport.

I salute parents and grandparents who spend this type of quality time with your kids. Heard "Huckabee" the other night say that when it comes to kids, you spell love ... T-I-M-E.
My eight year old grandson is eye-balling one of my .50 side locks ...

Good on you. My daughter never had any interest in guns till she was 12. Now at 16 she wants to shoot all the time. She hates bp tho.

LOL, My oldest "14 & with my X" will shoot firearms but not often, think that she doesn't like the noise or smell but my 6 year old loves it although she is still a little small to really handle any of my gear & I agree, I have wondered about my oldest but think she has too much of her mom in her.

The thought has crossed my mind but she's too much like me in other ways.

My father started me hunting VERY early, probably about 6 years old, dove hunting with a .410. Soon after, graduated to a .12 guage. Didn't start BP until I got grown. GREAT that you are introducing the kids at an early age!

I forget the age requirements (sad to say as a former Cubmaster) but you might have the kids check out the Boy Scouts, as they now have a Muzzleloading merit badge, as well as shotgun, and rifle.

The gun club I belong to has opened its gate in the past to the Scouts. Over time though, people start doing other things and forget about bringing in the Scouts.

However, we recently had interest from Scout Troops in two counties and said, sure, come on in. We will be having some Scouts there to set up targets (metallic and reactive) and also sell food as a Scout Fund Raiser during matches, and others will be coming strictly to learn how to shoot.

Last year started a High School Trap League with the help of the local High School, Illini West, and the Scholastic Clays Trap Program and we have the team using our grounds to train and for matches. It has worked out beautifully and the trap team actually made a $12.00 profit over the year from the money we gave them to start the program (buying shotguns, gear, birds, shells, etc...) In Illinois and some other states, I know that trap is a competitive sport for the state school sports associations.

Its' always nice to have somebody too young to buy alcoholic beverages come into the club because we don't have to argue with them about leaving the beer outside the club grounds!

(alcohol strictly prohibited here!)
