Reloading .300 Wby Mag with surplus powder
Is reloading the 300 wby with surplus 5010 or WC-860 ($5-6/lb) plausible? (available from hitech ammo)
Everything I've read indicates that WC-860 is comparable in burnrate to H870 (which I cant find in the newest hogdon data manual) and 5010 seems to burn slightly faster. I'd like to load 147 gr surp FMJ for practice (ya my shoulder is gonna pay!) to avoid paying for premium projectiles. Edit: I just found a load for H870 with the massive "250-grain Original" Barnes bullet. It calls for 83.5-88.5 gr of powder for 2490-2639 fps. Any ideas? |

Yes, either 5010 or 860 will work in the 300 Wby. I would start at about 85% case volume and work toward 100%. I think you'll find a good load at approx 95%.

My weatherby vanguard likes 130 grain, loves 180 and heavier grain, but wont throw 150 to 160 very well. I tried but no go. 130 and 180 I can put them touching at 100 yards but the 150 160 grain are in the inches for some reason.
I may check out the powder also. I normally use imr4831 to load for mine. |

After some extensive research and with the help of people on THR forums I've decided to purchase some of the WC 860 [when my buget... er wife allows]. I found data for H870 with 150 gr noslers I intend to work up to and I found some cheap 220 gr HPBT I'll use it in too. The thread on THR has the same title as this if anybody wants some info.

Just a forum member selling a box (100) of HPBT for $25. Nothing in bulk unfortunately.

okeedokee... Im using interlock 130 grains for plinking, and 180 interlocks for hunting. I was thinking about getting some 200 grains or maybe even some 220s for elk. I doubt Ill ever hunt or run into a grizzly here in Washington state, although it could be possible to run into one a little further north.
