I have 4 Ruger Mark pistols, and thats a good recommendation. Ill throw another one out that hasnt been mentioned. Bersa Thunder 22. Very well made, very accurate, good sights, and fun to shoot.

As others have said there is a trick to field stripping/reassembling the Ruger MK series.

Read and follow the directions. You know that little book they put in the box with the gun, or they'll send you one for free if you bought a used gun that didn't have it. BTW. You can find it online also. If you read and follow those directions, you'll have no trouble. If you have trouble, it's because you didn't follow the directions. I know because I didn't follow them. I wanted to do it MY way, not the way the guy who designed it, built it, and literally wrote the book on it said to do it.

Although, I must admit, nowadays, I don't bother. I just spray it down with Gunscrubber and put a couple of drops of oil back on it, here and there.

Any one of the three Rugers, MK I, II, or III, or the 22/45. They're all good guns. I've owned all of them at one time or another and never had a minutes trouble with any of them.

Honestly?

There's so many "good" ones out there today the question is impossible to answer.

I'd suggest just looking at all of them and handle as many as possible, then narrow down the selections and ask about specific guns.

My wife and I both have Ruger Mark III's. She has the Hunter model and I have the Target with a Tactical Solutions upper. We added Volquartsen triggers to each. Both are outstanding, fun to shoot, and crazy accurate. They are also a helluva lot cheaper to shoot than my 1911s.

I have a Colt Woodsman that is my favourite but if you want new I'd go for a Browning Buckmark.

Whatever you decide, enjoy your shooting and happy new year!

Ruger MK or a Buckmark if price is an issue, S&W 41 if price doesn't matter, a used High Standard is also fun.

I just fully field stripped my Ruger MK II and MK II era 22/45, cleaned and oiled them both including disassembling and cleaning two magazines for each pistol (four total), barrel brushing, and wet and dry swabs, and removed the barrels from their respective frames. It took me about 20 minutes total, for the field strip, cleaning and reassembly of both pistols, and I was taking my time.

Accuracy:

High-Standard Citation or Olympic (Early, Hamden-made); available used only.

Baikal 35m; don't know if they're being imported anymore, made by the good people who brought you the AK-47

Ruger Mark series

Fun:

Browning 1911 22, really a fun gun and quite accurate (though not in the league of the above), hard to find but currently manufactured in UT

Ruger Single-Six and Bearcat

S&W 422 and 622.

.22s are the most fun!

It depends on two things - how serious is the range work and how much can you afford.

For informal "target shooting", any of the above guns will do very well and probably shoot better than you can hold. But when the shooting gets serious and the competition gets tough, and you become good enough that the lower level guns won't hack it, then an S&W Model 41 is close to the minimum, not the top. The Ruger target models (I like the 5" heavy barrel) will do for accuracy, but have to have the triggers replaced with something better.

At the top level only Walther or Hammerli (some guns made by Walther) will bring home the hardware.

I have both a Mark II and a Buckmark. I can highly reccomend either one. Both are accurate enough for plinking/fun and very dependable.

Just put 450 rounds down the pipe today on the 22/45. Oh and in those 450 rounds I had not 1 malfunction! Cleaning was a b%*ch though

I'm not the best marksman but I thoroughly have enjoyed this pistol for 12 k rounds that I've put through it so far. Even used it for some hunting...

Cons: Not the best trigger( upgrading will greatly show you the extent of precision capabilities of this fixed barrel designed firearm)/ thin grips/ un-needed LCI, and mag release that renders gun unfireable/
take-down is a b%*ch the1st time

Pros: Proven for decades as a rugged long lasting piece/ Can be as precise as almost any of the top target pistols IMO/ Beaut of a bull barrel old school!/ [U!]You can Dry fire the pistol safely for the ability to practice trigger without a snap cap[/U]/ will function reliably with a large variety of ammo ( Bulk, Premium, Crap, HP, RN, Stingers, CP, etc/ picattiny sight rail included/ Unlimited upgrade capabilities....

No matter what pistol you get, there will be pros and cons.
