Does anyone know "rule of thumb" or a chart that has a conversion from guage,,,20,12,16,28, to a bullet diameter???

Actually, .410 bore is the equivalent of 68 gauge. Hope this helps!

Math...
Here's the whole picture. Gauge in scatterguns is a measure of how many bore-sized lead balls make a pound in a manner not unlike old cannon (5-pounder shot a 5 pound ball). A 16 gauge has a bore-filling ball of one ounce or 1/16 of a pound.
Lead has a density of 2867 grains per cubic inch or .4094 lb per cubic inch. So, the formula for a sphere is 4/3 *pi*radius^3. To get cubic inches of volume from a 1/16 pound ball, divide1/16 (pound) by .4094 (pounds per cubic inch). Its about .1528 cubic inches. Multiply by 3/4 (inverse of 4/3) and divide by pi. Take the cube root to get the radius of .3316" Multiply by 2 and voila, .6633, close enough for Kansas hunter education material. |
