Moonclip conversion?

I know that a lot of folks here have had revolvers cut for moonclips. My wife has a 640, and my sister-in-law has a 686 SSP, and they are both itching to get their guns cut for some moonclip action. My wife's birthday is in October, and I'm thinking about sending her cylinder off for a birthday present. It looks like the going rate for the major shops that I can find online is about $100.00. That seems reasonable to me for the liability and tool upkeep alone. Does anybody have any positive or negative recommendations to impart about this particular custom work? Thanks in advance!

I have a S&W 65 cut for moonclips and a 940 cylinder that uses moonclips that fits in both my 642 and my 60. So I have three guns that can be used with moonclips, I really like using them that way.

I have two revolvers using the Moon clips and I think they are a pain in the butt

I have two revolvers that use moonclips and I love 'em. Positive ejection of all empties at once and quick to reload. Beats speed loaders and strips hands down.

If you had your gun modified to accept moonclips, I wonder if it still functions without them.

Why would one want to do this to a working functioning gun? I can see it being done to a revolver that will be shooting a 45acp.

I had one that would, one that wouldn't. All shops I know of doing the work now leave enough rear cylinder face to load loose ammunition.

I found clips no advantage with .38s or .357s. The clips are thin and the relief grooves in the cases are narrow, so there is a lot of wiggle and it doesn't take much to blow the reload.

I have a .45 that is great but the short stubby ACPs in thick clips are a different cat from the long skinny .38s. I have seen a few 610s do ok, usually shot with .40 brass in the modern Buy Big Shoot Small fashion, and a very few of the 646 .40 cals.

Check out the machining video and it will make sense.

Anybody have recommendations for a shop that does this work?

Mark Hartshorne, Pinnacle High Performance.

He did the work on my gun and I couldn't be happier.

I have a S&W m25 .45 ACP and a Taurus 905 9MM that will shoot with or with out the Moon clips. Wasn't Charter Arms suppose have come out with a revolver that wouldn't need Moon clips. What happened to them?????

WildAlaska here did the work for my Redhawk .44.

Wild West Guns.

He required that I send the complete gun, however. Makes sense. You can end up with a change in depth of the primer relative to the firing pin if done incorrectly.

He did good on it. I'll write it up more once this particular custom gun is complete.

I've seen guns done by TKCustom and Clarkecustom - and they both looked pretty good ..... but I'm with the others saying I think moon clips are a pain in the butt ...

I will call and talk. That's the best offer I see so far.

I called them today. I'm a little creeped out by shipping a complete gun. That just doesn't seem right. Especially when it has to cross another country to get there!

LOL! To each his own, right? It's because of guns that are in this house that my wife wants this conversion! The 5-shot .357 clips aren't easy to come by, though. That may hurt.

I was thinking that I would probably have TK do it, until I got the tip on Pinnacle. That sounds like it may be the ticket. Keep the suggestions coming! I haven't put down any money yet!
