Double jeopardy?
Over at Tactical Forums.com a fellow just posted this:
"I hope this is okay but I have a vent/rant about a certain gun mag(SWAT). They have been improving the magazine or so it seems to me. This month they had a article by Walt Rauch on the Para LDA. September's Com. Handguns had pretty much the same article, just reworded to me. I know that articles are just filler between ads but I was hoping for better. thanks for letting me vent." http://64.177.53.248/ubb/Forum4/HTML/000319.html Q: Were both of the articles in question written by Walt Rauch? Unfortunately, it would not be the first time that an author (not necessarily rauch) had double dipped on the magazine publishers... |

Mad Dog, that was I. Both articles were written by Walt Rauch. The article itself is okay, as far as info goes but it was basically the same article worded diff. I understand that time is a factor in getting articles in and putting a mag out but ? I just hope this doesnt become the norm. As I said, this was not meant to be a put down, as far as SWAT magazine goes, it is a remarkable improvement since the new owner took over. I have been reading SWAT for the better part of 10 years and had never considered subscribing until now.

Like I said, it wouldn't be the first time that an author submitted all but identical articles to two magazines simultaneously.
I know of at least one other such incident. That writer no longer writes for EITHER of the magazines that he burned and embarassed. There is not a whole lot of cross talk between the competing editors until something like this happens, so a guy might get away with it, once... I wouldn't blame SWAT or Combat Handguns. Sounds like Walt Rauch is the culprit, if that is the right word. Any way you look at it though, "autoplagiarization" is crass in the extreme. Last edited by MAD DOG; December 2, 2001 at 01:14 PM. |

Mad Dog, PM 7-
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I hate looking stupid even when I have no control over it. I'll have a little "talk" with Walt. Denny
