new "signature" thought for my holsters... what do you think ???

1st off, it's getting hard to keep track of what holster fits what ( I've posted before looking for suggestions ) the holster I'm building right now is for my Air Lite L frame in 44 Special... I used a piece of milk chocolate colored Ostrich leather for a front outer layer... & in trying to make best use of the hide, I have one small blemish on the front of this one, that I was originally going to use a strap snap to cover up... however, I decided to go taller & strapless for this holster... & was thinking the other day about slicing off a cartridge base with the head stamp, & making a bit of decoration out of it... covering up the blemish, & telling me what cartridge the gun is chambered for, that I made the holster for... my machinist buddy has agreed to slice off a bunch of them on one of his machines, next we are looking at what type of rivets could be sized & fit to look like an unfired primer from the front ( for both large & small primer pockets )... I think these will be both functional, & add a touch of bling ( especially if using nickel cases ) & since I haven't seen this done regularly, I could use it as a type of signature item I add to my holsters

what do ya think ???

Then flatten then from the inside and solder a Tandy rapid rivet to the inside,,,
I've soldered rapid rivets to all kinds of things to make conchos,,,
Coins, old button faces, pieces of shaped sheet metal,,,
If it will hold solder it can work.

my machinist was talking about milling the diameter of some nickel plated rivets to fit in a beveled primer pocket hole... trouble is the base of most cartridges is so thick, that if I left the bottom of the primer pocket intact, the cartridge base would stick out like 3/16" or so... if we could make the primer pocket hole beveled, but with no bottom, & fit a rivet to it, that mimicked a primer the cartridge base could be cut as thin as the rim allows, which would be much less likely to snag on things ???

sorry... my digital camera sucks for close up work, but my guy has finished the 44 Special & the 32 S&W ( for lack of a better word ) studs, or orniments ??? & we decided on a different method of attachment...

last I worked on the 44 Special holster I wrecked my cheap rotary punch, so now that I got paid, guess I need to buy the better forged punch, for lacing... but I should be able to finish this holster this weekend, if I can pick up my lining leather too...

primer pockets have been drilled out & fine threaded, the brass rods fabricated with matching threads, screwed into the threaded primer pocket, with red Lock Tite... stainless washer / nuts threaded to match for the back side... I'll tighten the theaded back, trim off the excess brass rod, & add a drop of puple wicking Lock Tite... should be good to go...

btw... these brass rods were not polished 1st... the rest will likely be polished before screwing into the case head & Lock Titing ( trying to mimic the look of a live primer )

DAVE... I can't see the pics on that link ( maybe because I wasn't logged in ??? )

anyway... I did finish this holster over the weekend... I think it turned out pretty good... it's a high ride & canted holster that fits my 3" S&W Air Lite 44 Special

2-3 oz calf leather liner dyed saddle tan, ( 2 layers thick over the back of the cartridge stud ) 8-10 oz leather body dyed black, ( double layer thick on the belt loop portion ) & 2-3 oz Ostrich leg leather dyed milk chocolate on the front, with a nickel 44 special case head, & stitched with extra heavy braided black thread, & laced with 1/8" black leather lace...

so how did I do ???

DAVE... I logged on over there, & got to see the pics... using an allen bolt in the primer pocket like the other guy used looks like it works well ( I didn't like the small hex head nut though ) & I think they are too thick, stick out too far, using the whole primer pocket... I like our thinner design better, I think it more streamlined, & less likely to catch on things, & the thin round washer type nut is less likely to pull through ???

my guy is making me up 2-3 of all of my revolver calibers to start with, along with a couple of 5-Seven since I don't have a holster for that semi auto yet...

+1. You read my mind! But for cufflinks, I'd think 12-gauge on the outside and something in the .357 to .45 range on the inside. Maybe .410...
