Reloading 22-250

I'm trying to find out if anyone has reloaded a Hornady 53gr v-max boattail BC: .290 SD: .151 ..? I'm shooting a Remington model 700 26" heavy bull barrel 1:14 twist. It shoots 60, 55, and lower grain pills just fine. Hornady says that a 1:14 won't stabilize the 53grBT properly because of the length. The BC is too fancy to ignore for this round so I'd like to get them downrange in a group. Do you have any advice or reloading data for me? Any and all input is greatly appreciated.

JBM Ballistics Stability calculator agrees (with some data extrapolated from Hornady's other bullets) that that bullet would be marginally stable from a 1:14 twist. However, I have found that calculation to be rather pessimistic with small bore cartridges so you'll definitely have to try it and see.

For data, there is tons of it available on-line for any of the similar Hornady bullets, such as at Hodgdon's site. Extrapolate from there, start low and work up.

I called Hornady and the man I talked to seemed to be worth his salt. His analysis was to try it and see. He said the faster the better and the 26" barrel would give it a fighting chance. Any more advice is greatly appreciated.

I would be surprised if it *doesn't* shoot well, as I have read messages elsewhere that it does well, giving velocities in the 3700fps range.

I have a box I plan to try next year using IMR4064 (1st choice), Varget, and BLC2. And if I used H380, it would definitely see trial use.

I have yet to find a 22-250 that didn't like H380; it's my first choice for one powder to load lots of calibers. My old 788 liked FC brass, CCI 250, 36.0 to 37.0 of H380 and a 55 grain Nosler Solid base(discontinued much to my dismay). I would assume the Ballistic Tip should shoot about the same. Try that charge with your 53 grain Hornady pill; I bet it shoots lights out too.

The H380 looks like a good stable load that should push it over 3700 but I'm worried that ill be packing too much powder in the case considering that long pill. H380 is tried and true sir. I would dispute the bullet before h380 haha.

I have some 4895 I was planning to try but after more research I think I'll try Varget and Benchmark. I'd like to work those long 53's up to 3800fps. Fingers crossed.

I'll try both of your suggestions if at all possible this weekend and post the results. Thanks again!

I use 35gr of Varget for 3900fps with Hornady 50gr V-Max. This is 2-3gr below max. This is out of a 700 VLS with 1:14tw 26in barrel. Varget and R15 are cleaner than H380. 1:14 likes 40-55gr the best. But a 60gr wouldn't be bad, I am sure the 53gr is shorter than the 60.
