Cool self-defense shotgun idea

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a over/under shotgun with a really short barrel and pistol grip so you can conceal carry with a shotgun? It would be like one of those Serbu Super Shorties but an over/under so it would be even smaller.

You mean like those .45LC/.410 derringers?

Back in the 1920's and 30's there was a short shotgun called the "Auto Burglar". It was a pistol gripped side-by-side shotgun with about 10" to 12" barrels. The main purpose was an effective gun against car thieves who could (then) jump on the running boards armed with guns or knives to car jack you. Made in 12, 20 and (I'm told) 28 gauge, these were nasty little critters to face -- or to use inside a car. But very effective!

I think the Auto Burglars are classified as an AOW by the feds and prohibited in many states. Someone told me they were going to be reclassified as a C&R piece, but I haven't confirmed that yet.

You could just go with something like this.

.410/.45LC 5 Shot Revolver

But being rifled I guess you'd be limited to slugs in the .410.

I actually had 12 gauge in mind. It would be the ultimate personal defense cannon

Nah, you can shoot shotshells in a rifled bbl - they'll work. They won't pattern spectacularly, but they don't need to for defensive work. I'd use lead, not steel however - steel shot would tear up the rifling.

When I was at the gun show this last weekend they had a few "shotguns" that where 12guage pumps but really small talking like under 12" barrel with just a pistol grip (they might have been semi's I forget) but they were really small.

correct me if i'm worng but...

i thought 18" was the minimum legal barrel length for a shotgun. Are the derringer-type shotshell pistols not classified as shotguns?

When I first read the post I was thinking more along the lines of a plain jane Beretta 686 with a very dark stain on the stock and the barrels cut down to 18.5".

I'd even take a Ruger Red Label All Weather/Synthetic & Matte Stainless with the 18.5" barrels.

Now both of those would be great house guns! Or if loaded with slugs you'd have instant 2nd. shot for bears!

Oh, I'd also keep the chokes.

I think short-barreled shotguns that have an un-removable pistol grip can legally be owned with a $5 tax stamp or something since its an AOW.

Negative!

Any shotgun with a barrel shorter than 18" must be registered with the A.T.F. per the N.F.A. The shotgun had to come from the factory equipped with a pistolgrip only to quailfy as an A.O.W which is $5. If you register it as an A.O.W. you can never install a buttstock unless you re-register it as a Short Barrelled Shotgun. If it originally came with a full buttstock, then it would have to go the short barrelled shotgun route which is $200. If it is registered as a S.B.S. your grip/stock options are limitless. It does not matter whether or not the grip/stock is removable or not.
