Difference in Mossberg 500, 590, 835??

what is the difference in models?

I will be browsing this weekend at the gun show and looking for an 18" barrel one, and was wondering what moddel I should be looking for, and what the differences were.

Thanks

the 500 has a 4 shot mag tube, and shoots only up to 3" shells. the 590 has an 8 shot mag tube and shoot 3" shells. the 835 is basically a suped-up 500 that holds 3 1/2" shells.

barrels are not interchangeable amongst any of the 3 models.
590's are cylinder bored, and have an mag tube that can be lengthened. 835's are "overbored" with a bigger than 12 gauge bore-you can't use regular Winchester/Mossberg sized choke tubes with them. 500's are also available in a 7+1 size magazine, but those require special barrels.
If you only want home defense-get a 590. They are stronger (steel receiver and trigger guard), and are purpose built for LE and home defense. They're also pretty much useless for hunting of any kind.

don't get me wrong, the 870 is a great shotgun, but being left handed, i MUCH prefer the safety on the mossbergs. either way you go, both will serve you just fine.

So many models

You have the Model 500: 5+1 capacity, 18.5" barrel (interchangable with their longer trap barrels), wood or synthetic furniture.

Model 500 "Persuader": 7+1 capacity, 20" barrel, full length magazine tube.

Model 590: Full length magazine tube, 20" barrel, 8+1 capacity.

Model 590A1: Full length magazine tube, 20" barrel, 8+1 capacity, heavy barrel, steel trigger guard, steel safety, bayonet lug.

All of these models have a 3" chamber.

Being left handed I would reccommend you look for a Browning BPS. Bottom ejection, top safty, and dual action bars. I don't have one but have shot several. If I didn't own several 870s I would have bought one by now.

Cheers,

ts

i have to agree in the browning BPS. that is another good shotgun, but i believe it is a little bit more expensive than the mossbergs or remmys.

I'm a righty so the left handed safety is not needed... and $$ are a factor as long as I can still get a solid dependable one for the money.

You'll get good dependability from any Mossy. Cost wise, the cheapest would be the 500. The Persuader runs about $225-250, depending on locale.

The 590 appears to run about $175-200 more and as stated above the only difference is all metal parts and heavier barrel.

I have the 500 with the shorter cylinder barrel and longer mag. I think it's called "persuader" or "defender" or something like that. It won't accept any other 500 barrel, like a choked barrel or a rifled barrel, so it's not as versatile as a "normal" 500.

It does ok hunting, though. I shoot non-magnum Remington "Slugger" ammo, and it hits pretty tight groups at 100 yards. (deer have to be much closer before I trust the slug).

Regards.

Hey sleeping dog-wanna make it more versatile? You can buy a 5 shot magazine tube from gun parts corp, and then you can use all of the regular barrels. The mag tubes just screw on and off, so you can swap them within the Mossberg 500 series.
PM me for details if interested.
