AR upper: .458 Socom?

Will a .458 socom upper fit on a normal AR lower... and utilyze the same AR .223 magazines?

Yes the upper with fit but, I am not sure if the 5.56 mags do or not. Also some conversions need a different bolt if I am understanding the info correctly.

Cool, I'm looking at Rock River Arms' .458 complete upper. Has anyone had any experience with this upper? Thanks!

No direct experience, but I'm going to make a logical deduction:
Although the size of the mags would be similar since they all have to fit into a standard AR-15 magwell, I would expect that the follower would be shaped different for the larger caliber.

I hope you reload. Commercial ammo is $2.50/round at it's cheapest.

The .458 Socom upper will fit on any lower that takes .223R, 5.56, etc.

Standard .223 magazines will work without modification although insyructions included with my rifle it is RECOMMENDED a slight bevel is filed on the magazine.

I used standard unmodified (and MagPul) magazines for years without any problems.

My buddy just finished putting together a .458.

Standard lower, and it'll feed out of pmags without modification. Plus, it has the added advantage of making your banned 30 round 5.56 mags into perfectly legal 10 round .458 mags - how is it your fault that they also happen to fit 30 rounds of 5.56?

The sites are blocked at work so I can't give you the direct links but they're easily Googled. Wilson Combat and Teppo Jutsu's sites both say that unmodified .223 mags work. (Though I don't know if that's the preferred mag.)

You can see in the picture...the mag on the left is a PMAG, the feed portion is cut out and lowered. The mag on the right is a Thermold...as you can see, it would require some trimming to feed correctly

Change the follower and it might work, even if it does a reasonably decent job of feeding 556.

Yeah, but if it is a mag designed for 556 I doubt ATFE is going to buy it is a ten round mag. Modify it ever so slightly for 458 socom use and it MIGHT fly. If you have a 458 socom upper of course.

The one I shot used unmodified pmags and worked flawlessly. Standard AR15 lower as well.

I tried some (not all) of my pmag with negative result. I've decided to go with the Lancer mags, they are for .223 but I use them only for the .458.

The .458 socom was designed to be able to implement a wide variety of bullet weights and styles. I believe the magazines may need to be modified for certain bullet types/weights but the ones I was using (I have no idea, probably the cheapest available) did not require modification. I'm guessing it's heavier round nose ammo that causes the magazine feeding issues.

I have a RRA 16" 458 socom. I handload Barnes TTX bullets to hunt with. I never tried using the standard 45/70 jhp rounds that will fit in the case, so i dont know about those.

i have not modified nor have i used special magazines for the rounds.

I use 30rd PMAGS and CMMG 10rd magazines. No problems.

super expensive to shoot. i hope you reload. dont lose your brass, they're ~$2/each.

Yes Sir!

.458 uppers will fit to basically any standard lower. I also know that 20 round 5.56 mags will hold 7 rounds of .458. No modification necessary. I have used a .458 and I can say that it is one of my personal favorite calibers.

I doubt there's going to be any sort of a mag ban, but I gotta say...that's a frigging loophole if I've ever seen one...

Fortunately, I have it from a reliable source Diane Feinstein doesn't hang out here...

But I'd be willing to bet the manufacturers already have this one in their back pocket. After all, what liberal is smart enough to know this?

10 round .458 mags, anyone?

I keep looking at that bullet and thinking "shotgun slug" with better ballistics. I need to get out of this thread before I convince myself I can't live without it.
