Mauser I.D help needed

I just recently traded for a Mauser a lot like the one in this link post except it does not have the fancy engraving on the bottom metal and its a 30-06. this is the rifle that I am talking about: http://fnforum.net/viewtopic.php?t=9046. the barrel had a FN on the barrel and says something about it being vanadium on it. the action has a 1948 mark on the side opposite of the bolt handle right about the stock line. I think it also says Firearms International right after that. I don't have the rifle here so I am not 100% on the last part. it also has a firearms international crest on the top of the ring area. so I am not sure if it is a Firearms International rifle or what for sure. the stock has a metal butt plate and looks just like the one in the pics. oh it also has the bolt handle knob with the flat spot on the one side. so anybody have a clue what it is worth and what model it is? no body on the Mauser forum seems to know anything really. all the F.N made Mauser's I have seen the ring area of the action is marked with the F.N crest so I am fairly sure that it's a Firearm International rifle. the one thing I am having a hard time with is the barrel marking are not correct for a Firearms International rifle. all the ones I have seen have different markings on the barrel. I am thinking its either some rare or really early model. or maybe a action that somebody put a different barrel on. it looks all factory so I am not to sure.

This rifle is a commercial FN Mauser, built for Firearms International (the US importer, based in Washington, D.C.), and sold by Firearms International as the "Musketeer" or "Musketeer II". Because this was built for import into the US, FN didn't put their crest on the receiver. HTH.

how do you tell the difference between the "Musketeer" and "Musketeer II"?

I don't have any of Firearms International's catalogs, but here's what their Musketeer II looked like; http://store.vintagepaperads.com/ser...sketeer/Detail If your rifle doesn't have screw holes for the front or rear sights, I'd say you have a first-generation Musketeer.

it has a hooded front sight and the rear sight has been removed to clear the scope. so the next question is since its nothing rare is it possible to re chamber a 30-06 Musketeer II to 7mm rem mag? I am assuming if the action length allows it to be done the bolt would have to be modified a little? is there any other modifications that would need to be performed to make it work?

You'd have to have it re-barrelled for the smaller bullet diameter, and have the bolt-face enlarged to handle the larger case-head; all things considered, it would probably be less hassle just selling/trading it to someone who wants a 30-06 to begin with, and putting the proceeds towards a 7mm Rem Mag.

I would end up re-barreling anything else most likely any how so it would not be any major thing. enlarging the bolt face might be the deal breaker though, I knew I would have to have that done to make it work. do you have a general Idea of what that might cost me? I realize it will vary quite a bit but I am trying to see if it is feasible to cost wise to do it. if it costs me an arm and a leg to do I will most likely just go with a Remington 700 p in 7mm rem mag. I guess I could buy a Remington 798 but the 700 p setup will end up more being more cost effective.

No idea, sorry; I'd take it into your local gunsmith and ask for an estimate, but it's likley that you'd be further ahead buying one already in 7mm.

Frankly I think going from .30-06 to 7mm R.M. is a waste of time and money. Check a handloading manual and see that the MagNUMB has maybe 100 fps advantage over the standard round.

But if you just must, E.R. Shaw will sell you a barrel for $165, fit it to the gun for $70, mung up the action for the belted case for $60, bead blast and blue for $90, add $24 return shipping. Figure it cost $24 to send it to them, for a total of $433. Other brands of barrel will cost more.

And then, you can add some more $$$$ to the above, for gunsmithing fees to alter the action feed rails, so it will reliably feed a belted case.
