Please explain to me....

How do these "new" style Rifles work?
I received a catalog the other day showing these traditions bp rifles that look like they are a modern bolt action.
The only bp I have ever used/seen used are the standard (old) style.

I assume the style you refer to as the old style is the one with an exposed hammer on the side of the barrel (typically referred to as a caplock). Nipple sticks up and hammer hits primer on nipple fire goes down turns corner goes into side of barrel and ignites powder. Then someone designed an "inline" which has a breechplug in the back of the barrel with a nipple in the breechplug sticking straight back. A sliding bolt device was invented that you pulled back and it locked back then when you pulled the trigger it flew forward and hit the primer; fire goes straight ahead into the back of the barrel and ingnites the powder. (since it does not turn a corner it was thought that the ignition would be more positive and reduce lock time from trigger pull to ignition). To make the inline more asthetic they have redesigned the sliding bolt to be a real bolt like a centerfire rifle but instead of the bolt going forward like the first inline rifles it has a fat "firing pin" which goes forward and hits the primer. There are a lot of other types of "inline" rifles being made now the most popular seems to be the break action which look like a single shot shotgun but they have a breechplug in the back where a shotgun shell would go if it were a shotgun and the firing pin hits a 209 shotgun primer which fits in the nipple which is part of the breechplug. Now if all that makes sense you have your explanation. If not I wasted a lot of time typing this.

the previous answer was well written and I would agree.
Most people that use the "NEW" are hunters that want all the advantage of a bolt action gun with better trigger actions (they think) more reliable firing (they think) and better capability of killing deer (they think).
Its kind of like golfers with titaniam clubs and all that crap, ifs its new its better. and also a lot of crap.
Its the shooter not the gun in most casses. being a triditional black powder shooter, I have no use for the new guns, but I am a shooter not a huter. If I was and all I cared about was food on the table, I would probably have one.

That was a helpful explanation.
And yes I was refering to the caplocks I have as "old" style.
I guess it makes sense for hunting puposes to have every advantage (percieved or real) available to put down an animal as quickly and as humane as possible.

That is true. I have a couple of caplocks and a couple of inlines and when I hunt for meat I carry the Stainless Omega with a scope and shoot Black Mag'3 powder with Hornady SST bullets with plastic aero tips. Arizona allows all of the above for muzzleloading hunts (notice Arizona does not call it a primative hunt) just muzzleloading, although they do not allow smokeless or I would be hunting with a stainless Savage muzzleloader.
